Description
Koyomi Mizuhara, known as Yomi, is a central figure throughout Azumanga Daioh's official manga, anime series, and the animated short *Azumanga Daioh: The Very Short Movie*. Her full name, translating to "read between the lines" or "almanac," reflects its delayed reveal in the manga's second volume, where she was initially called only "Meganekko" ("Glasses Girl"). She stands 161-163 cm tall with brown hair and eyes, wears glasses, and is the second-tallest main female character.

Yomi acts as the primary voice of reason in her friend group, often displaying maturity and responsibility. She shares a long-standing contentious friendship with Tomo Takino, dating back to elementary school, marked by frequent arguments and Yomi's tendency to insult Tomo or retaliate physically with an uppercut when provoked. Despite this antagonism, mutual care underlies their relationship, though neither openly acknowledges it. Academically, Yomi excels, ranking second only to Chiyo Mihama, and demonstrates solid athletic ability, though not matching Sakaki or Kagura.

Persistent dissatisfaction with her weight defines a central aspect of her character, leading to ongoing diet attempts often abandoned when tempted by sweets and spicy foods. She anonymously seeks diet advice via radio programs, a habit Tomo finds amusing. Contradicting her mature persona, Yomi exhibits occasional childishness or hypocrisy, such as feigning disinterest in a theme park visit while secretly studying guidebooks or participating in superstitious rituals like asking Chiyo to imbue an amulet with intelligence for exams. She possesses a subtly cruel sense of humor, deliberately feeding Osaka overly spicy food to induce hiccups.

Yomi displays specific fears and dislikes, including hay fever and a hatred of cicadas. Her interests encompass theme parks, roller coasters, and karaoke, despite being a notably poor singer. She uses comparatively masculine Japanese speech patterns, especially during interactions with Tomo. Parallels exist between Yomi and physical education teacher Minamo Kurosawa, including long-term childhood friendships, responsible demeanors masking occasional immaturity, sensitivity about romantic lives, and enduring teasing about their insecurities.

Her character development shows her as the last among her friends to pass university entrance exams. In *The Very Short Movie*, Yomi makes an appearance without unique plot contributions specific to that short. Supplementary media like the anniversary manga *Azumanga Daioh: Supplementary Lessons* further explores established traits such as her fear of cicadas.
