Description
Within the narrative of KamiKatsu, Dakini is introduced as a powerful and complex figure whose personal history is deeply entwined with the fallen empire. Originally one of the Archons, an elite group serving directly under the Emperor, she was tasked with a cruel mission. Using a unique ability, she was forced to suppress all feelings of love and sexual desire among the populace, effectively reducing it to zero. This prolonged suppression led to the birth of children without the capacity for reproduction, a consequence that left her questioning her own purpose and growing disillusioned with the empire she served. As a form of quiet rebellion, she secretly wrote and distributed books filled with her knowledge of sexuality within the imperial capital, which were promptly declared forbidden texts.
In her past, before becoming an Archon known as Dakini, she lived in an isolated village and was called Kaminai. She was the spiritual core of her community, known for possessing prophetic and mind-reading abilities that were said to be unprecedented in history. Due to being unable to move her arms and legs from birth, she relied entirely on a devoted caretaker named Kanya, who was always by her side. One day, Kanya disappeared, and strangers invaded her room, dragging her away past a hallway covered in blood. This was the end of her life as Kaminai, and she was transformed into the Archon Dakini, gaining mobility in the process but losing the person dearest to her.
Years later, during her time as an Archon, she met a young girl named Toka, who was naturally capable of feeling love. The two became close friends, but Toka was eventually branded a heretic and sent to a remote isolation village called Kakuri. Believing Toka might find happiness there, Dakini let her go. Tragically, years later she learned that Toka had died there; after falling in love with a man and giving birth to a daughter through natural means, she was killed by the villagers who saw her actions as bizarre and aberrant. This event became a pivotal turning point. Following the collapse of the empire, Dakini founded her own organization, the Dakini Sex Love Association, dedicated to her new mission: allowing people to live freely by their instincts and desires, to love, and to return to being normal human beings who form families.
Dakini is most often characterized by a cheerful, energetic, and laid-back personality that is reminiscent of a gyaru, or gal, subculture style. She presents herself as exubérante and unapologetically prioritizes her own desires, championing a motto of doing as one pleases when it comes to love and instinct. However, this vibrant exterior masks a past filled with loss and a deep-seated sense of regret. Her motivations are not simply hedonistic but are driven by the trauma of Toka's death and a genuine desire to prevent such tragedies from happening to others because of suppressed emotions.
Dakini plays a significant role as a direct antagonistic force to Yukito Urabe and his cult, the Mitama Salvation Cult, before later becoming a powerful ally. When Yukito's group infiltrates her organization, she discovers them and puts them on trial. The conflict escalates into a direct confrontation where she unleashes her full power, an ability that manipulates the desires of others to the point of incapacitating them. Despite Yukito's clever strategies, it is ultimately a combination of the genuine goddess Mitama borrowing power from the true deity Dakini and a betrayal orchestrated by Yukito that leads to her defeat. In the aftermath, a startling revelation brings her story full circle: Riche, a young girl who helped Yukito from within Dakini's cult, is revealed to be Toka's daughter. This discovery serves as a powerful moment of redemption and connection, aligning her interests with Yukito's group. She later becomes a mediator between different factions and works alongside them, even assisting in plans to liberate children from other cults by offering them guidance and a path to independence rather than simply using her powers on them.
Her key relationships are defined by her past losses. Her affection for the departed Toka is the primary engine for her actions, and her connection to Riche as the daughter of her lost friend forms a powerful bond. She has a complex relationship with the Archon system and the fallen empire she once served. She also develops a practical alliance with Yukito Urabe, who recognizes her talents in improvisation and deception. Her caretaker Kanya from her time as Kaminai is another profound loss, the memory of which continues to haunt her, expressed through her adoption of Kanya's mannerisms and fashion.
Throughout the story, Dakini demonstrates significant development. She begins as a tool of an oppressive regime, becomes a rebel driven by personal tragedy, and eventually evolves into a leader who seeks to create a world where love is free. Her methods shift from simply controlling desires as she was once forced to do, to genuinely listening to and solving the problems of the lost, such as the children she helps liberate later in the story.
Dakini possesses notable and formidable abilities centered on manipulating the desires related to love and sex in others. This power can be used to either suppress such feelings entirely or to amplify them to a fever pitch, effectively brainwashing people and turning them into her followers, or stripping enemies of their will to fight. She typically manifests this ability by summoning a large skull to ride through the air, from which she can fire energy blasts that induce these effects on a target. This power is not limited to humans, as it can also affect monsters. For combat, she wields a heart-shaped scythe as a physical weapon, though her primary strength remains her supernatural ability to influence the minds and emotions of others. Her past self, Kaminai, was also said to possess unmatched powers of precognition and mind-reading.
