Description
Mitama is a central character in the anime KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World. She is the patron deity of the Urabe cult that Yukito belonged to in his previous life on Earth. When Yukito died during a ritual and was reincarnated into a world without gods or religion, Mitama was able to follow him. She manifested from the only jewel that Yukito managed to bring with him. Mitama takes the form of a young girl with long black hair and green eyes, often seen barefoot. Her origins are marked by a shift from the object of worship in a small cult to a divine being attempting to carve out a place for herself in a world that has no concept of faith. Mitama possesses a complex personality that combines childlike entitlement with the imperiousness of a deity. She is demanding and spoiled, acting as though she expects to be worshipped on principle. At the same time, she is obsessively devoted to Yukito, referring to him as her property and remaining unable to refuse his requests. Toward people other than Yukito, she can be cold, dismissive, or even cruel, viewing other beings, especially the artificial Archons of the Imperial City, as rivals for the scarce resource of faith. Despite her divine nature, Mitama is deeply dependent on Yukito for her survival and for carrying out her will in the physical world. Her primary motivation is to grow her power and establish herself as the sole god in a world that does not naturally support divinity. She is eager to convert the population, believing that she can become more powerful as the number of her followers increases. Her desire for worship is genuine, and she takes joy in performing miracles, reviving the dead, and destroying her enemies. Mitama functions as the source of supernatural power for Yukito and his group. In the narrative, she provides the divine backing that allows Yukito to challenge the atheistic rule of the Imperial City. She serves as the symbol of their new religion, a real goddess whose miracles provide proof of faith in a world that previously had none. Mitama shares a unique and deeply codependent bond with Yukito. She was the god of his father's cult, and in the new world, he becomes her prophet and manager. Their relationship is a blend of genuine affection, mutual need, and exasperation; Yukito often treats Mitama with frustration and annoyance, yet he is the only person she trusts to lead her followers. Mitama also develops relationships with the other members of Yukito's community, such as Alural and Siluril, whom she views primarily as her believers rather than as equals. She holds a distinctly adversarial view of the Imperial Cities Archons, artificial deities that consume faith without being true gods, viewing them as obstacles to her divine monopoly. Over the course of the story, Mitama experiences clear development. She starts as a practically powerless being, unable to do more than manifest her form because she lacks followers in the new world. As Yukito assists her in recruiting believers through a mix of genuine miracles and clever manipulations, Mitama recovers her abilities and grows in confidence. Her trajectory moves from a helpless tag-along with grand ambitions to a formidable divine force capable of challenging the artificial gods of the state. However, her core personality of selfish devotion to Yukito remains constant along the way. Mitama's abilities are directly tied to the number and strength of her followers. When sufficiently empowered, she possesses reality-warping capabilities often referred to as miracles. These include the power to kill enemies with divine wrath, to resurrect the dead, and to transform individuals, as seen when she changes the knight Bertrand into a woman. Her power is fundamentally different from that of the Imperial City's Archons, who derive their abilities from state technology rather than genuine faith. Mitama's divine power is more flexible and less bound by physical rules, but it also imposes on her the need to gather and maintain a congregation to sustain it.
