Description
Loki is an Archon, a member of the imperial special forces in the empire of KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World. She initially infiltrates the hidden village where the protagonist Yukito Urabe lives under the guise of a male farmer named Clen, presenting herself as a calm, composed, and trustworthy advisor. In reality, she is a key figure who holds deep knowledge of the empire's true nature. As one of the oldest Archons, she discovers that the empire is sustained by ancient technology, that the emperor has long been dead, and that the so-called gods are actually powerful cyborgs.
Loki's personality is marked by a calm, analytical demeanor and a strong intellectual curiosity. She is not driven by malice but by a desire to understand the world's origins and the nature of gods and Archons. She finds the rigid, mechanistic society of the imperial capital oppressive and is disturbed by the compulsory suicide system that treats citizens as disposable. In contrast, she feels a sense of comfort and belonging in the hidden villages, where people live freely with their desires and human flaws. This contrast motivates her to seek the truth and eventually to bring down the empire.
Her motivations shift as the story progresses. Initially, she observes from the shadows, using her illusion ability to gather information and even divert attacks away from the hidden villages. After meeting Yukito and the goddess Mitama, she decides to actively dismantle the imperial system. She reveals her true identity to Yukito's group and leads them to the imperial palace, exposing the empire's secrets and helping to destroy its ruling structure. Following the empire's collapse, she uses her illusion powers to impersonate the emperor and convert the entire capital's population of over a million people into her followers, establishing herself as a de facto ruler. Despite this, she does not seek to kill Yukito or his companions; instead, she views them as rivals and encourages their growth, sometimes even secretly aiding them. Her ultimate goal is to restore a world where people can live freely and humanely, not to become a tyrant.
Loki's relationships are central to her role. With Yukito, she maintains a complex dynamic of rivalry and reluctant mentorship, often refusing to be categorized as a simple enemy or ally. With Mitama, she recognizes the goddess's power but does not submit, seeking to understand and counter it. Among other Archons, she acts as a liaison and holds confidential information. Her dual identity as Clen also creates a significant bond with the villagers, who see her as a friend.
Her notable ability is illusion manipulation. She can create convincing visual and sensory illusions to disguise herself, deceive others, and even project false targets. She demonstrates advanced control by impersonating the emperor and manipulating the perceptions of over a hundred thousand people simultaneously. She can also adjust illusions to redirect worship to other entities, thereby amplifying their power. This ability makes her a formidable strategist rather than a direct combatant, and she rarely uses overt aggression, preferring to manipulate events from behind the scenes.
Over the course of the story, Loki evolves from a covert observer to a proactive revolutionary, then to a controversial ruler who uses the same systems she opposed in order to reshape society. She remains pragmatic, calculating, and driven by a vision of a world where human freedom replaces mechanistic control.
