Description
Atar is a central figure in the narrative of KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World, initially introduced as a formidable antagonist before undergoing a significant transformation. Her background is rooted in the Empire, where she serves as a member of the Archons, the Empire’s most powerful fighting force. As an Archon, Atar is a product of a highly structured and authoritarian system, raised and trained to follow the orders of the Assembly without question. She is described as being one of the youngest Archons, and her power is said to rival that of the goddess Mitama.

In terms of personality, Atar initially embodies the ideals of a loyal and stoic soldier. She is proud, determined, and approaches any obstacle with the resolve to overwhelm it using her immense strength. Her mindset is rigid and unquestioning, making her a fearsome opponent who executes her duties without hesitation. However, beneath this cold exterior lies a crucial personality trait: she is mentally quite childish, which makes her susceptible to manipulation by others. This combination of immense power and a simplistic, almost childlike worldview defines her early demeanor.

Atar’s primary motivation in the story’s first half is to serve the Empire and maintain its order. She is dispatched to eliminate the isolated village where the protagonist Yukito Urabe has established a new community, seeing it as an anomaly that must be erased. Her role in the story is that of a powerful enforcer for the established order. A pivotal moment occurs during her fierce battle with Mitama and Yukito. Though she proves to be a nearly insurmountable threat, the conflict ends not in her victory but in her psychological collapse. She is betrayed and left behind by a fellow Archon, Loki, which leads to the shattering of her entire belief system. Upon discovering that the Emperor is dead and the Empire she swore loyalty to is a hollow construct propped up by science and deception, Atar loses all hope and purpose.

Atar’s key relationships are central to her development. Her initial bond is with the Empire itself, represented by figures like Loki. After her defeat and despair, the protagonist Yukito Urabe becomes the catalyst for her change. Through a combination of support, encouragement, and his own form of trickery, Yukito helps her regain her confidence and find a new reason to exist. This marks the turning point in her development, as she sheds her identity as an agent of the Empire and becomes a reliable and powerful ally to Yukito and his group. She eventually becomes an official god by gaining followers, which solidifies her transformation from a weapon of a false system to a genuine source of faith and power.

Notable abilities are a defining feature of Atar. She possesses fearsome combat skills and is regarded as one of the strongest characters in the series. Her most prominent power is the ability to generate and release an immense amount of heat from her palms, a force described as being capable of pulverizing a mountain. Her appearance reflects her connection to this power; before her transformation, she has a unique horn and a reticle-like pupil in one of her yellow eyes. When she uses her full Archon power, her appearance shifts, and after becoming a god, her appearance changes significantly—she loses the horn and her eye returns to normal, often wearing a black dress and appearing more human. A simple yet defining trait is her favorite food, ice cream, which becomes a symbol of her newfound happiness and softer side after joining the protagonists.
