Description
Keita Ōba initially exists as a human pop idol, having been a member of the boy band LOVE♡∞. Before the catastrophic event known as 8.31, he was an object of affection for a young Kadode Koyama, who had been a fan of his since middle school. Following the arrival of the alien mothership over Tokyo on that date, the real Keita Ōba disappeared and was eventually declared dead at his family's request. When he seemingly returns later in the story, it is revealed that his human body has been inhabited by an Invader, an alien being from the mothership who now uses the idol’s form to live covertly among humans.
The personality of this entity, who is known as Keita, is a peculiar blend of alien innocence and learned human behavior. He displays a distinct naivety and a childlike sense of joy and curiosity about the world around him. As the Invader learns to pass as human, primarily through studying the internet, his speech becomes marked by quirky affectations, such as ending sentences with internet slang like "lol". Through his observations, he forms complex opinions about humanity, noting that people can be vulgar, stupid, and kind all at once. His perspective provides a unique philosophical counterpoint to the human characters, as he openly reflects that from his people's point of view, the humans who attacked the Invaders without provocation are the true invaders.
Keita’s primary role in the story is to serve as a bridge between the human world and the perspective of the Invaders. His existence becomes a living question about the possibility of coexistence, showing an alien not as a monstrous invader but as a curious and largely harmless individual. As public exterminations of Invaders escalate, Keita’s situation becomes increasingly precarious, and he seeks shelter, eventually finding a hidden life with the main characters Kadode and her best friend, Ouran Nakagawa. Throughout his cohabitation with them, a notable bond develops between him and Ouran, and he becomes the first character to be able to see into her memories. Though Ouran initially considers using him for her own plans, their relationship deepens.
As the narrative progresses, Keita’s understanding of the impending crisis grows. He becomes aware that the alien mothership is reaching its thermal capacity and will soon self-destruct, an event that would annihilate both the Invaders and humanity. This knowledge drives his ultimate motivation, leading him to disappear from Kadode and Ouran’s lives in an effort to stop the mothership’s core from malfunctioning, attempting to save both species from Armageddon. Physically, Keita has notable abilities and traits. He uses strange alien tools and devices, one of which allows him to read the minds of others. His alien nature also causes his body to behave strangely; for instance, if he sneezes or is strongly jolted, his face can open horizontally from the bridge of his nose. He is a male teenager with brown eyes and black hair, and his human form is distinguished by two small tear-shaped moles under his left eye.
