Description
Lulu Kirifuda, originally known as Lulu Takigawa, is a character who first appears in the Duel Masters Versus series and continues into Duel Masters King Max. She is the childhood friend and later wife of Katta Kirifuda, the sister of Lucifer, and the mother of Joe Kirifuda. Her early life was marked by fragile health, with frequent hospitalizations beginning at the age of four. Over time, she grows into a capable and caring adult.
In terms of personality, Lulu is warm and supportive but also possesses a strong will. She becomes visibly irritated when addressed as an older woman, as seen in an encounter with a rival café employee who calls her aunt. She retains a youthful energy and occasionally displays the same comedic facial expressions from her earlier years, though she has matured significantly. Her motivations center around providing a stable home for her son Joe, running the café Takigawa (which she manages after her husband’s departure), and maintaining the family bond despite Katta having left for a distant star.
Within the story of Duel Masters King Max, Lulu fills a supporting role primarily as Joe’s mother. While she was a main heroine in earlier seasons, her focus shifts to domestic life and managing the café. She rarely participates in duels during this era; one instance where she does duel occurs under mind control inflicted by a villain, not of her own volition. Her presence is nonetheless frequent, and she appears in opening and ending sequences, notably in the first King ending theme along with other female characters.
Key relationships include her son Joe, who affectionately calls her deko-chan, a nickname inherited from Katta. She often makes curry bread for Joe, unaware that he is not fond of it. Her husband Katta is physically absent but remains a emotional presence; she continues to wear a wedding ring. She also works alongside her grandfather at the card shop and later at the café. Her bond with her brother Lucifer is part of her background, though it is less emphasized in King Max.
Lulu’s character development shows her transition from a determined young girl with health struggles to a capable single mother and business owner. She balances her caring nature with a noticeable, almost superhuman physical strength—a trait she carries from her youth—which she occasionally demonstrates even in front of Joe. Her hairstyle changes between seasons; in Duel Masters King Max she wears her hair in a ponytail. Her notable abilities include her physical endurance, her skill in running the café, and her emotional resilience in managing a household alone. She does not display any special dueling abilities in this series, as her role has moved away from active competition.
