Description
King Gilgamesh is a central figure in the story, serving as the principal of Rosewood Academy, the elite school where future heroes are trained. His full name is Gilgamesh Soulmaker, and he is an older man with a tall stature, standing roughly a foot taller than the protagonist, Blade. He has long, white hair that reaches his neck, with two small tufts hanging freely above his forehead. His attire typically consists of a long, furry coat worn over a light-colored tabard, secured with a black belt, paired with white undergarments and black boots.

Before becoming the principal, King Gilgamesh was a renowned ruler who led the Eight-Nation Alliance in fierce battles against the army of the Demon Lord. His past as a great king is a key part of his identity, and his experience has given him a deep understanding of what it takes to cultivate true heroes. He is the one who personally admitted Blade, the former Great Hero, into Rosewood Academy following the battle where Blade's powers were annihilated alongside the Demon King.

King Gilgamesh possesses a complex and often contradictory personality. On the surface, he appears to be a carefree, childish, and somewhat troublesome individual. He dislikes being shown excessive respect and prefers to interact with students on almost equal terms. He is known for being a gossip who enjoys spying on students to learn the school's latest rumors and for teasing them about topics that might make them uncomfortable, especially matters of the heart. This frivolous nature is most evident in his relationship with Blade, whom he frequently aggravates by calling him Hero Blade or joking about his relationship with the female lead, Arnest Flaming.

Despite this playful demeanor, King Gilgamesh has a much more serious and principled side. He is a person with strong morals and does not freely give out information; he believes it must be earned. He took it upon himself to alter some of the academy's curriculum and fundamental principles, and he even fired the previous principal to take the position for himself. His actions are all in service of a greater goal: the proper nurturing of heroes. This is captured in his own words when he states, We're trying to nurture heroes here, indicating that his seemingly unreasonable and challenging assignments have a purpose in the students rehabilitation and growth.

Several key relationships define his role in the story. His most prominent connection is with Blade, the former Great Hero. King Gilgamesh appears to be an old friend of Blade, and this history is hinted at numerous times. He personally oversaw Blade's entrance exam and takes a special interest in his integration into school life, though he often expresses this through teasing and giving him cryptic challenges. He is also familiar with the House of Flaming, recognizing Arnest as a member and mentioning that her father, the General of Flaming, was of great help to him in the past.

King Gilgamesh acts as the primary instigator for much of the plot. His main role is to set events in motion, often by giving unreasonable assignments to the students for the sake of practical training. For example, he arranges a tournament for the students with the promise of a fight with the hero, much to Blades annoyance. He also provides Blade with the key to the Royal Library of Banned Literature, suggesting he might find answers there, while also warning him of obstacles he will encounter. Through these actions, he guides the students development from behind the scenes, rarely intervening directly but creating the circumstances they need to grow.

Throughout the series, King Gilgamesh does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation but rather reveals the depth and wisdom behind his initial, seemingly frivolous facade. His development is shown through the increasing understanding of his motives, as both the characters and the audience come to see that his childish antics mask a brilliant and effective, if unorthodox, method of hero training. His notable abilities are not extensively showcased in a combat sense, but his true power lies in his political acumen, his vast knowledge of the world and its heroes, and his uncanny ability to devise challenges that push students to their limits. His history as a former king who led armies suggests considerable personal strength in his youth, but his primary role in the present is as a strategist and mentor rather than a front-line fighter.
