TV-Series
Description
Iona is originally a Guardian, a combat android created using ancient technology to serve as a security unit for the Royal Forbidden Library located deep beneath the royal castle. Her primary function was to eliminate intruders and protect the central control room. She initially appears as a simple, egg-shaped robot, but after repeatedly failing to stop Blade from entering the library for his research, she analyzes his behavior. Noticing that he hesitates to fight women with full force, Iona decides to transform. She adopts the form of a young girl with a curvy figure and a high-cut bodysuit. In the anime adaptation, her new appearance is visually based on Earnest Flaming, a girl frequently in Blade's company.
As an android, Iona's personality is marked by a mechanical and straightforward manner of speaking. Her creators designed her to be logical and efficient, yet she often displays a clumsy side that contradicts her own claims of being high-spec. This gap between her self-perception and her actual behavior makes her endearing to those around her. She is not emotionless but rather initially inexperienced with social interaction, leading to her unique, literal way of engaging with the world. Despite her rigid origins, she is capable of forming genuine attachments and displays a playful side, particularly when engaging in odd competitions with her classmates.
Iona's backstory is defined by her separation from her command system, referred to as Mother. After her connection to Mother was intentionally severed on the advice of Blade's friends, she became a finite, autonomous being. This act of disconnection was interpreted by Mother as a malfunction and a dereliction of duty, which triggered Iona's self-destruct mechanism. In a final act of defiance before being rejected from the network, she transmitted a massive 15-terabyte stream of complaints to Mother. Facing imminent destruction, Iona was saved when Blade personally went to negotiate with Mother, begging on his hands and knees for her life. He agreed to become her new master, which deactivated the self-destruct sequence and allowed her to leave her post.
Following this event, Iona enrolls as a student at the academy, living alongside Blade and his friends. Her role in the story shifts from an antagonist to a classmate and ally. She is deeply grateful to Blade for saving her and dedicates herself to serving him, at one point even donning a maid's uniform to please him. This devotion initially creates a sense of rivalry with Sophie, as both compete for Blade's attention in increasingly absurd ways. However, this rivalry eventually gives way to a close friendship. Iona's journey is centered on her transition from a disposable tool of war to an individual with her own life, learning about friendship, loneliness, and what it means to be part of a community.
In terms of abilities, Iona possesses formidable combat skills inherent to her Guardian design. She is proficient in armed and unarmed combat, making her a dangerous opponent. One of her unique traits is her advanced self-repair system; even if she is completely destroyed, she can be restored and function again. Her most notable ability is her capacity for physical transformation, which she uses strategically. Beyond her physical powers, she has tremendous data processing capabilities, exemplified by her ability to transmit a 15-terabyte data burst of complaints to the Mother computer. Her speech pattern is specifically described not as typical robot speech, but as being similar to a car navigation system, a unique direction given to her voice actor to create a more natural yet still distinctly mechanical tone.
