Description
Ginjirou Nezu is an elderly resident of Hitogashima Island, where he works as a hunter. He is easily recognized by his gray hair, beard, and the eyepatch covering his left eye, and he is seldom seen without his signature red hat. As a hunter, he is almost always seen carrying a rifle and is highly proficient with a variety of firearms, including shotguns and modified nail guns, displaying exceptional marksmanship even in difficult conditions.
Outwardly, Nezu presents a calm and mysterious demeanor, similar to that of his close ally, Hizuru Minakata. Beneath this serious exterior, however, he carries a deep emotional trauma stemming from his wife's transformation into a shadow. This event weighs heavily on him, and a significant part of his personal journey involves coming to terms with this loss, which he ultimately confronts by taking action against his wife's shadow copy. His primary motivation is the extermination of shadows, a mission he considers his life's calling, driven by the pain of what happened to his family.
In the story, Nezu serves as a knowledgeable and battle-hardened ally. He possesses a unique understanding of the shadow phenomena, including their weaknesses. He knows that driving three stakes or nails through a shadow can effectively immobilize it. Nezu is one of the few people on the island with direct combat experience against shadows, a role that puts him on the front lines in the fight to protect the community. His expertise is not merely practical; he also carries historical knowledge, having learned from his grandfather about a "shadow sickness" from the island's past, where afflicted individuals would see their doppelgangers before being replaced.
His most significant relationship is with Hizuru Minakata. They share a deep and long-standing camaraderie rooted in mutual trust. Hizuru considers him one of the only people on Hitogashima she can rely on. This bond was forged years earlier when Nezu came to her aid during a battle with a berserk shadow entity. He often collaborates closely with her and other key individuals, providing crucial tactical support and intelligence.
Nezu's character undergoes a notable development over the course of the events on the island. He moves from a man haunted by the trauma of his wife becoming a shadow to someone who achieves a form of closure. In a pivotal moment, he finally confronts and slays his own wife's shadow, an act witnessed by others, which represents his overcoming of that long-held emotional pain. This act allows him to move forward and commit fully to the final battles.
His notable abilities lie in his combat skills and accumulated wisdom. As a seasoned hunter, he has excellent aim and tactical intelligence, allowing him to use everyday tools as effective anti-shadow weapons. His reaction speed is heightened enough to intercept attacks aimed at his allies. Crucially, he understands the mechanics of shadows, including their limitations, such as the range within which a copied object can exist, and he applies this knowledge in battle to turn the tide against supernatural foes. His experience and resilience make him a formidable and reliable fighter against the shadow threat.
