Description
Futabas Grandpa is a significant supporting character who appears as the overprotective yet loving grandfather of the protagonist, Futaba Igarashi. His personal name is never revealed in the series, and he is referred to simply as Grandpa or Ojii-chan. He has a large, solid, and tall build that is comparable to Harumi Takeda, and his physique can initially appear intimidating. Despite his age, he looks notably young, appearing to be more like Futabas father or older brother than her grandfather, indicating that deceptive youthfulness runs in the family. He has long, naturally green hair similar to Futabas, and he is almost always seen wearing his distinctive sunglasses. He also rides a motorcycle.

His personality is boisterous, doting, and fiercely protective, especially regarding his granddaughter. He is what many would describe as a gentle giant, as a single conversation with him reveals that his intimidating exterior houses a caring and supportive nature. His overprotectiveness often manifests in an obtrusive manner, much to Futabas annoyance. For instance, he sometimes brings up embarrassing stories from her childhood, such as the time she wet the bed. He also has a tendency to panic and imagine the worst-case scenarios, such as when Futaba does not answer her phone and he assumes she is on a date with Takeda. This leads him to go to great lengths to ensure her safety, including watching the film Your Name to try to understand modern young love, though with somewhat comical results. He is also known to be a former soldier who is skilled at shooting games.

Futabas Grandpa is driven by his deep love for his granddaughter and his desire to protect her, stemming from his role as her primary caregiver after she was raised by him until the age of thirteen. Despite his overbearing tendencies, his core motivation is her happiness and safety, and he ultimately respects her fierce independence. During a flashback in the sixth episode, he explains that Futaba has always been a headstrong and self-sufficient person who resolved to move to Tokyo by herself to succeed on her own merits without becoming a burden to him. Although he gave her his blessing and she thrived, he cannot completely suppress his protective instincts, which is the central conflict of his character.

In the story, his primary role is to act as a catalyst for both comedic conflict and heartwarming resolution, primarily through his relationship with Harumi Takeda. When he first arrives in Tokyo, he immediately butts heads with Takeda, seeing him as a rival for Futabas attention and affection. The two engage in a series of competitive activities, including fishing and batting cage sessions, trying to outdo one another. However, they eventually bond over their shared admiration for Futabas strength of character and discover they have a great deal in common, including similar hobbies and physical prowess. He develops a mutual respect for Takeda, recognizing him as a trustworthy stand-up guy despite their initial rivalry, and the two ultimately unite to protect Futaba from a group of harassing punks. Apart from Futaba and Takeda, he is not shown having significant direct interactions with other office characters like Sakurai or Kazama, but his presence is central to the episodes in which he appears.

His relationship with Futaba is the most significant in the series. She finds his constant hovering and public coddling to be extremely obnoxious because it challenges her self-image as an independent adult. However, it is clear she loves him deeply and is grateful for his support, even if she has a hard time admitting it. Because he raised her, he serves as a surrogate parent figure. His development throughout his appearance in the series involves learning to find a balance between his natural urge to protect Futaba and respecting her need for autonomy. By the end of his visit, he and Takeda agree to restrain their overbearing feelings and only step in to help when Futaba is genuinely in serious need, which is a decision she happily accepts. He also shows development in his relationship with Takeda, transitioning from hostile rival to a friendly ally who begrudgingly trusts the younger man.

Among his notable abilities, he is physically very strong, a retired judo practitioner who is both capable and willing to use his strength if a situation calls for it. His large stature and intimidating presence alone are often enough to deter troublemakers. He is also skilled at shooting games, a nod to his background as a former soldier. Beyond his physical capabilities, his most notable trait is his unwavering dedication and the often humorous ways his concern for Futaba manifests itself, from sending a flurry of panicked text messages to engaging in absurd competitions with Takeda.
