Description
Gendle is the primary antagonist in the Duel Masters King! anime, serving as the enigmatic mastermind behind the group known as the Five Gattles. His background is revealed to be surprisingly humble; before the events of Duel Masters King!, he was a teacher at a school run by the character Abaku Onifuda. During that time, his physical appearance was that of an ordinary person, a stark contrast to the monstrous figure he later becomes.

Gendle possesses a strikingly unnatural appearance, characterized by tall stature and a physique where purple and green skin seem to be patched together. He wears a formal tuxedo that, like his skin, is a mix of black and white. His spiky hairstyle is reminiscent of earlier protagonists in the Duel Masters series, though no direct connection exists. He stands approximately 195 centimeters tall.

In terms of personality, Gendle presents himself as a perfect gentleman. He consistently speaks in a polite and courteous tone, even toward those he considers enemies, and he appears to forgive the failures of his subordinates with grace. However, this refined exterior masks a profoundly cruel and narcissistic core. His politeness is merely a tool; he views everyone around him as expendable pawns who only hold value as long as they are useful. This extends to the very creatures of the Duel Masters world, which he treats as mere tools to be manipulated and discarded without any sentimental attachment. He has no interest in the past or in history itself, stating that he only cares about the future. This dismissive attitude toward all things, living or otherwise, makes him a rare example of a character in his series who is driven by pure selfish evil rather than a tragic backstory or a misguided sense of justice.

Gendle's primary motivation is to collect twelve legendary cards recorded in an ancient text. His goal is to use the power of these cards to awaken the Five Origin Dragons, immensely powerful beings that govern the five civilizations of the Duel Masters world. By obtaining this power, he intends to rewrite the history of Duel Masters and reshape it according to his own vision, ultimately placing himself as the true king of that reality.

To achieve this goal, he leads the Five Gattles, an organization of duelists he has gathered and equipped with special cards of his own creation. His role in the story is that of the primary force opposing the protagonist, Joe Kirifuda. A key aspect of his character is his unique ability to see the future. This power allows him to predict the outcome of duels, including which cards will be drawn and played, giving him a seemingly insurmountable advantage. However, Gendle perceives Joe as a significant threat because the young duelist possesses the unique capacity to defy and change the futures that Gendle has foreseen. This clash between a man who believes he can control destiny and a boy who proves it is mutable forms the core of their conflict.

Throughout the series, Gendle has several key relationships. He is the boss of the Five Gattles, commanding members such as Hyde and Himiko to do his bidding. While he speaks to them politely, his treatment of them is purely transactional, and he has been shown to discard them without hesitation once they have outlived their usefulness. His most significant relationship is his adversarial one with Joe Kirifuda. Despite his immense power and future-sight, Gendle suffers multiple defeats at Joe's hands, each one challenging his conviction that he can control the future and becoming more personal with each encounter.

Gendle's character undergoes notable development, though it is largely a deepening of his villainy rather than a redemption. He starts as a mysterious figure pulling the strings from the shadows but gradually becomes more directly involved in conflicts as Joe continuously upsets his plans. His physical transformation from a normal teacher into a patchwork creature hints at a past sacrifice of his own humanity for power. In the climax of the series, his obsession with defeating Joe and securing his future leads him to take a final, desperate step: he physically fuses himself with his most powerful creature, Volzeos Balamord, becoming a monstrous dragon-like being in a last-ditch effort to eliminate his rival.

Gendle's notable abilities are formidable. His primary power is future prediction, which he uses to orchestrate events and control his duels. He also possesses a mysterious ability to synthesize cards, fusing legendary creatures with others to create entirely new and powerful beings called Dispectors. In dueling, he is a highly skilled and adaptive player, using multi-civilization decks built around his powerful Kingmaster Dispector cards, including creations like Dorphadillom, Holy Demon Concatenated King; Dokindante Twenty Two, Forbidden Time Hybrid King; and Romanogri-La the 0th, Zero Prison Connected King. Ultimately, his most extreme ability is the power to merge his own body with his creatures, sacrificing his human form to become a hybrid entity of immense power.
