Description
Hyde, whose full name is Tenouji Hyde, is a significant character introduced in the Duel Masters King! anime. He serves as a member of the Five Gattles, an elite unit operating under the command of Jendle. Hyde is instantly recognizable for his stoic demeanor and unwavering loyalty, traits that define his initial role within the group. This intense allegiance is directly rooted in a traumatic event from his past. Before becoming a Gattle, Hyde was celebrated as a perfect elite excelling in all academic and extracurricular pursuits. However, a single duel defeat, strongly implied to be against Abaku Onifuda, shattered this identity. The public scorn that followed drove him to a suicide attempt, from which Jendle saved him, offering a new purpose and redemption as part of the Gattles.
Hydes personality is initially shaped by immense pride and an obsession with being special and perfect. He acts as a calm and collected figure, faithfully executing Jendles orders and sometimes reprimanding others for acting on their own initiative. This psychological foundation becomes critically unstable after his first defeat at the hands of protagonist Joe Kirifuda. Following this loss, Jendles subsequent dismissive comment that he is not special triggers a severe mental breakdown. In this state, his personality shifts dramatically; he becomes erratic, displays signs of a fractured psyche, laughs maniacally, and develops dark circles under his eyes. He becomes driven by a desperate need to prove his worth and secure Jendles approval, resorting to psychological manipulation in duels, such as using discarded cards to emotionally torment his opponents.
Throughout Duel Masters King!, Hydes role evolves from a loyal subordinate to a primary antagonist driven by personal obsession. His key relationships are central to this development. His bond with Jendle is a complex mix of gratitude and desperate need for validation, which eventually curdles into resentment and rebellion. His repeated duels with Joe Kirifuda serve as the main catalyst for his transformation, forcing him to confront his own flaws and the nature of being special. His past with Abaku Onifuda is also a key part of his history, explored in Duel Masters King MAX. Hyde undergoes considerable development. After his breakdown, he confronts his own pain and, through interactions with Joe, receives the crucial advice that one must first acknowledge others as special before being special oneself. This leads to a moment of acceptance regarding his defeat. He eventually rebels against Jendle in an independent duel, loses, yet later finally acknowledges Joe as the one who might be capable of defeating Jendle, signifying his growth beyond blind obsession.
In terms of notable abilities, Hyde is a highly skilled duelist. In Duel Masters King!, he initially uses a multi-civilization deck focusing on Water, Fire, and Nature, centered on Electrofused Dispectors. After his breakdown, he switches to a Water, Darkness, and Nature deck featuring Sutured Dispectors. His special draw phrase is a declaration of an unyielding pursuit of the summit. When he reappears in Duel Masters King MAX, his deck shifts once more to a Water civilization deck, based on the Demonio race. His history, psychology, and evolution from a perfect elite to a broken servant and finally to an independent duelist make him a complex figure within the series.
