TV-Series
Description
Dariel is the protagonist of the story, a man in his thirties who begins the series having just been fired from his position in the Demon King’s Army. He had served as an assistant to one of the Four Heavenly Kings, a role in which he was valued for his intelligence and initiative rather than for any magical talent. He is the stepson of Granbarza, a former high-ranking demon general, and was raised from infancy among demons after being found as an orphan. His stepbrother, Bashvaza, who succeeds their father, dismisses Dariel specifically because he is unable to use magic. This firing, and the subsequent revelation about his past, forces him to leave the only life he has ever known.
Homeless and directionless, Dariel wanders until he saves a young human woman named Marika from a monster. She brings him to her village, Lux Village, where he undergoes a registration test for the Adventurer’s Guild. Confident that he is a demon, Dariel believes the test will expose him, but he passes easily. This event forces a profound realization upon him: he is not a demon at all, but a human. This discovery forms the core of his background, as he must reconcile the identity he was raised with against the species he truly belongs to. He is a man who spent decades considering humans his enemy, now discovering he is one of them.
In terms of personality, Dariel is defined by a practical, reliable, and fundamentally decent nature. He is not a glory-seeker or a natural hero. His primary desire is for a quiet, stable life, which is reflected in his decision to settle in the backwater Lux Village as a low-level adventurer rather than seek power or revenge. He is often earnest to a fault and possesses a thoughtful, methodical mindset that served him well in his logistical role in the demon army. While generally calm and level-headed, he can be easily flustered, particularly by Marika’s forward and affectionate behavior. He is also a pacifist at heart, preferring to protect others and avoid unnecessary conflict, a trait that leads him to seek diplomatic solutions even when violence is a more obvious path.
Dariel’s primary motivation shifts over the course of the story. Initially, he simply wants to survive and find a place where he belongs. After finding refuge in Lux Village, his motivation transforms into a deep desire to protect his new home and the people in it. This protective instinct extends to his relationships with both humans and demons, as he becomes driven by the hope of preventing conflict between the two warring races. His actions are consistently aimed at community building, such as utilizing his knowledge of a nearby mine to bring prosperity to the village and negotiating to maintain peace even when it puts him in a difficult position.
His role in the narrative is that of an unexpected peacemaker and a reluctant powerhouse. While he wishes for a slow second life, his competence, both in combat and in administration, continually draws him into larger events. He becomes a bridge between the human and demon worlds, leveraging his understanding of both sides to defuse tension. He is also a stabilizing force; after his dismissal, the Demon King’s Army begins to collapse because Dariel was the one who secretly kept everything running smoothly, highlighting that his true strength was always his organizational genius.
Dariel’s most important relationship is with Marika, the village chief’s daughter who insists he stay with her family. She develops a strong romantic interest in him, and she becomes his strongest emotional tie to human society. He also develops a key rivalry-turned-friendship with Gashita, the village’s only other adventurer, who initially resents Dariel but eventually comes to respect him and call him an older brother figure. With his stepbrother Bashvaza, he shares a fraught relationship defined by jealousy and betrayal. Despite this, Dariel continues to try to reach out to him, demonstrating his forgiving nature. Other significant relationships include his adoptive father, Granbarza, whose decision to raise him in secret sets the entire plot in motion, and the hero Laidy, who becomes aware of Dariel’s true abilities and seeks him as an ally.
Dariel undergoes significant development as he learns to accept his true identity. His journey is one of self-discovery, moving from believing he is a useless, magic-less demon to understanding that he is a human with extraordinary potential. He begins as a passive victim of circumstance and gradually becomes an active agent for change and community leadership, eventually taking on the role of village chief. His worldview expands as he realizes that the conflict between humans and demons is not as black-and-white as he was taught. A notable development in his abilities occurs after a battle with Bashvaza, where exposure to a forbidden spell makes him the only being capable of wielding both aura and magic.
Regarding his abilities, Dariel is unique in his mastery of Aura, a human energy that boosts weapon capabilities. While he served in the demon army fighting barehanded because using human weapons was considered a disgrace, his compatibility with Aura is at the highest possible level, making him a master-class warrior. He wields this power with a sword and relies on his physical strength, tactical thinking, and precise knowledge of monster anatomy, having memorized their weak points during his time in the demon army. This combination of practical knowledge, exceptional Aura control, and eventually, unique magical ability, makes him one of the most powerful beings in his world, even though he primarily wishes to use that power to live a peaceful life.
