Description
Oczy is a main character in the second part of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, introduced roughly a decade after the events involving Rafal. He is a substitute fighter and duelist by trade, working among a group of guards, and he comes from a lower-class background. His name is the Polish word for eyes, a detail that connects to his defining physical trait: he possesses exceptionally keen eyesight, sharp enough to observe distant objects and movements with remarkable clarity. Despite this gift, he is afraid to look at the sky, a fear that reflects his broader outlook on life.
Oczy has an extremely negative mindset. He holds no expectations for the world and describes life as harsh and hellish, wishing only to go to heaven as soon as possible. He is pessimistic, resigned, and initially uninterested in intellectual matters such as astronomy or theology; his focus is simply on surviving. In spite of this bleak worldview, he is portrayed as kind, gentle, and capable, with a quiet decency that emerges as the story progresses. He once survived an accident that claimed a friend, an experience that shaped his fatalistic attitude.
His role in the story begins when he and a fellow duelist named Gras are tasked with guarding a heretic during transport, accompanied by the inquisitor Nowak. Gras, an amateur astronomer, has been observing Mars and is frustrated when the planet unexpectedly retrogrades. Before dying, the heretic reveals the location of a box containing astronomical research and gives Oczy a pendant. After Gras falls to his death when a bridge collapses, Oczy retrieves the box and seeks out Badeni, a demoted priest, who agrees to study its contents on the condition that Oczy continues Gras’ astronomical observations. In this way, Oczy becomes the protector and practical partner of the heliocentric research, using his combat skills and exceptional vision to support Badeni’s work. He learns to read and write over the course of their collaboration, gradually moving from illiterate survivor to a committed guardian of forbidden knowledge.
His key relationships are central to his development. With Badeni, he forms a close but sometimes friction-filled partnership built on mutual need: Badeni supplies the intellect and mathematical skill, while Oczy provides physical protection and keen sight. With Jolenta, a scholar’s assistant who joins their cause, Oczy shares a bond rooted in their mutual status as outsiders, and her idealism helps guide him toward a more hopeful purpose. His evolving relationship with the truth they protect transforms him.
Oczy’s development is marked by his movement from nihilism to meaning. Initially a man who believes the world offers nothing worth caring about, he finds purpose in protecting a truth greater than himself and in carrying forward the work of those who came before him. When he and Badeni are eventually captured by the Inquisition, Oczy sacrifices himself to give Badeni a chance to escape, though Badeni is ultimately captured as well. Oczy faces his end with calm acceptance rather than fear, having overcome his old despair. His notable abilities include his extraordinary eyesight, his skill as a fighter and duelist, and the physical courage he uses to shield others. He embodies the common person who, despite lacking formal education, is moved by the awe of the cosmos and chooses to defend it with his life.
