OVA
Description
Kaoru Koganei is a young boy who serves as the youngest member of Team Hokage in the series Flame of Recca, including its video game adaptation Final Burning. His background reveals that he was originally an orphan whose talent was recognized by Kurei, the adopted son of Kouran Mori. Kurei took Kaoru in, raising him and treating him like a younger brother. Because of Kaoru's exceptional ability to solve transformer-type puzzles with incredible speed, Kurei entrusted him with a powerful Madougu, a type of mystical tool, known as the Kougan Anki.
Initially aligning himself with Kurei's faction, the Uruha, Kaoru helped them in their schemes, including the kidnapping of a girl named Yanagi. He developed a liking for Yanagi, and his loyalty to Kurei was shattered when Kurei broke his promise not to harm her. This betrayal led Kaoru to defect from the Uruha, as he could no longer follow someone who had so deeply hurt him and gone against his word. He subsequently left to join and assist Team Hokage, the group centered on protecting Yanagi, despite initial hesitations from some of its members.
In terms of personality, Kaoru's demeanor reflects his young age. He is typically mischievous, cheerful, and approaches situations with a playful spirit, sometimes treating conflicts as if they were a form of amusement. Despite this lively exterior, he has experienced moments of loneliness and doubt, such as a brief sequence in the manga implying a sense of isolation before he met Kurei. His decision to leave the Uruha demonstrates a strong moral core and a capacity for serious conviction when his values are violated. His role in the story is primarily as a valuable combatant for Team Hokage, using his unique weapon to protect his new friends and fight against powerful adversaries. During the Ura Butou Satsujin tournament, when Team Hokage was short a member, Kaoru officially joined their ranks to help protect Yanagi, proving his abilities and loyalty in battle.
Kaoru's key relationships are central to his development. His former bond with Kurei was that of a devoted younger brother to a revered older figure, making Kurei's betrayal especially painful. After joining Team Hokage, he forms strong bonds with his new teammates, including Recca Hanabishi, Domon Ishijima, Fuuko Kirisawa, and particularly Tokiya Mikagami. His relationship with Yanagi is also significant, as his fondness for her and his desire to protect her from harm is a primary motivation for his defection. His character development shows a transition from a follower who was used by Kurei to an independent young fighter who chooses his own path based on his personal sense of right and wrong, finding a new family and purpose with Team Hokage.
Kaoru Koganei's notable abilities are exceptional. He is amazingly athletic, demonstrating great quickness and agility that allows him to outmaneuver genetically enhanced opponents. His greatest asset in combat is his mastery of the Kougan Anki, a puzzle-type Madougu that can transform into multiple distinct forms. While a skilled user might take as long as forty seconds to change the weapon's configuration, Kaoru can accomplish this in a mere 0.6 seconds due to his genius-level puzzle-solving skills. The known forms of the Kougan Anki include Kiba, a large pole-arm or halberd-like weapon; Ryuu, a chain-sickle or kusari-gama; Kyoku, a pair of giant scissors; Mikazuki, a boomerang; and An, a bow that fires metal arrows. The weapon is also suggested to possess a hidden sixth form called Mu, which can only be achieved by cycling through all five standard forms in the correct, lengthy order. In this formless state, the Kougan Anki disassembles into dozens of pieces, which can be wrapped around an opponent before attempting to reform, causing devastating piercing damage.
