Description
Fuko Kirisawa is a central character in the anime and manga series Flame of Recca. She is a sixteen-year-old girl who initially appears as a childhood friend and long-time rival to the protagonist, Recca Hanabishi. Her longstanding goal has been to defeat Recca in combat to make him serve as her personal ninja. This drive is a key aspect of her early motivation and sets the stage for her introduction into the main conflict.
Fuko is often described by other characters as a tomboy due to her love of fighting and her tough, straightforward demeanor. She is the quickest member of her team and prefers tight-fitting clothing that does not restrict her movement in battle, and she is almost always seen wearing a white headband. Despite her rough exterior, she possesses a strong respect for human life and despises anyone who takes it for granted, a trait that becomes evident when she confronts opponents with a cruel and ruthless nature. While she is not vain, she can become genuinely angry if someone insults her appearance. She also has a hidden feminine side that she rarely shows, and she tends to react with embarrassment or physical violence when her teammates tease her about it.
Her role in the story becomes firmly established when her desire to defeat Recca is exploited. A mysterious woman named Kage Hoshi offers her a powerful weapon called a Madōgu, which takes the form of a gauntlet named Fūjin that grants its user the ability to control the wind. Desperate to settle her rivalry, Fuko accepts the Fūjin, unaware that Kage Hoshi had implanted a special crystal in it designed to take control of her mind. Under this brainwashing, Fuko becomes aggressive and power-driven, forcing Recca and his friend Domon Ishijima to fight her. Recca ultimately defeats her by destroying the corrupt crystal with his flames, freeing her from the mind control. After this incident, she keeps the Fūjin and joins Recca and his growing group of allies, which becomes known as Team Hokage, as a key fighter representing the element of wind.
Her key relationships evolve significantly over the course of the narrative. Her dynamic with Recca transforms from rivalry to a reliable, if sometimes contentious, friendship and alliance. She also develops a bond with Yanagi Sakoshita, the kind-hearted girl Recca has sworn to protect; despite her initial jealousy and resentment, Fuko eventually becomes friends with her. Her most distinctive relationship is with Domon, a larger and boisterous member of the team. Domon consistently makes open declarations of love for her, which Fuko usually responds to by hitting him or verbally spurning him. However, her feelings are more complicated than she lets on, as she has never explicitly stated she is not interested and has even shown moments of jealousy when his attention was not on her.
Throughout the tournament and battles that follow, Fuko demonstrates notable growth. She becomes a more dependable and integral member of Team Hokage, using her abilities to protect her friends and achieve their shared goals. She is often portrayed as one of the more level-headed members in battle, using her intelligence and agility to assess situations. Her primary Madōgu, Fūjin, allows her to generate wind-based attacks for both offense and defense. Notable techniques include Kamaitachi, a razor-sharp blade of wind; Kaze no Tsume, which creates claw-like wind projectiles; and Kazadama, a high-density ball of solid wind. The Fūjin is also inhabited by a small, fox-like spirit who considers its wielder to be its master. In addition to her wind abilities, Fuko is a proficient hand-to-hand combatant and skilled with throwing darts known as Kiri, which she used even before obtaining her Madōgu. Later in the story, she also acquires another Madōgu called Shinryo Shintō, a bladed tonfa that can change size and which she uses for close-range combat.
