Description
Azusa Sasaki is a supporting character in the Sound! Euphonium series who also serves as the protagonist of the spin-off novel Sound! Euphonium: Welcome to the Rikka High School Marching Band. She is a student at Rikka High School, a prestigious institution known for its nationally acclaimed marching band, and is in the same year as Kumiko Oumae from Kitauji High School. Azusa plays the trombone and eventually becomes the president of her school's band in her third year. She is a friend of Kumiko from their time in middle school band together, and their relationship evolves into a friendly rivalry as they attend different high schools. Physically, Azusa has fair skin, straight mid-length dark hair that she typically ties up into a ponytail, and bright light-indigo eyes. She stands 157 centimeters tall, has a March 7 birthday, and A blood type.
Azusa has an energetic and charismatic personality. She is generally very friendly, caring towards her friends, and passionate about music. She knows when to be serious and is often quite mature and understanding of various situations. However, beneath this sociable exterior, Azusa has a more complex inner world. She is a perfectionist who strives to do everything to the best of her ability and feels uncomfortable when she falls short. Despite being an extrovert who thrives on interpersonal interactions and views having friends as a measure of status, she tends to wear a mask in social settings and prefers light, substance-less conversation over meaningful discussions where she might reveal her vulnerabilities. She has a strong desire to be needed by others, yet finds it very difficult to ask for help or show her own weaknesses, leading her to shoulder her problems alone. Her pride is closely tied to her musical abilities, which come more from hard work than innate talent, and she feels threatened by prodigies who can match her skills with less effort.
Azusa comes from a home where she lives with her mother, a working woman who has raised her since her father left when Azusa was young. Because her mother is rarely at home due to work, Azusa grew up to be very independent and self-sufficient, not wanting to cause trouble for others. This background fuels both her fierce independence and a hidden jealousy of others who have more present families. At home, she cares for a small dog named Unagi, who was entrusted to her by her grandparents. Azusa also has problems with her vision and typically uses contact lenses at school and glasses at home.
In the story, Azusa first appears sitting beside Kumiko as they await the results of a middle school band competition. Her decision to leave to tell another band member the results creates the moment for Kumiko to have her fateful exchange with Reina Kousaka. Later, at the SunFes festival, Azusa performs with Rikka High School and meets Kumiko again, asking her why she chose to attend Kitauji. In the Rikka High School spin-off novels, which take place concurrently with Kumiko first year at Kitauji, Azusa navigates her first year in a highly competitive marching band environment. She rises quickly through the trombone section but remains unsatisfied unless she can become the best. As a second-year student, she becomes an exemplary figure for new members, and by her third year, she is elected band president due to her charisma and outstanding skills, leading the band to further victories.
Azusa key relationships include her friendship with Kumiko Oumae, who she supports in her decision to seek a new start at Kitauji. She maintains a connection with Kumiko while also viewing Reina Kousaka as a respected rival, recognizing Reina extraordinary musical ability. Within her own band, she has a particularly significant and complex relationship with Ami Naze, a fellow first-year who joins the band with no prior instrumental experience. Azusa mentors Ami, and their relationship becomes one of codependence, with Azusa becoming dangerously dependent on Ami dependence on her. This dynamic eventually leads to conflict and personal growth as both learn about the importance of balanced relationships. Azusa also experiences tension with Serina Hiiragi, a classmate whose differing views on friendship lead to confrontation and force Azusa to confront her own insecurities. She shares a healthy professional rivalry and admiration for her section leader, Miku Sezaki, and maintains collaborative relationships with her fellow trombone players Shiho Togawa and Taichi Matoba.
Throughout her time at Rikka High School, Azusa undergoes significant development. She enters as a highly skilled but prideful musician who struggles with vulnerability and authentic connection. Through her challenging relationships with Ami and Serina, she learns about the nature of friendship and the importance of sincere expression. By the end of her first year, she begins to move beyond her codependent patterns toward more balanced relationships. As a third-year president, she balances her leadership responsibilities while setting her sights on attending a music university after graduation, fighting against doubts about her humble origins and preparation.
Azusa notable abilities include her exceptional skill on the trombone, an instrument she has played since the fourth grade, giving her seven years of experience by the time she enters high school. She owns her personal trombone, purchased with her mother support when she started middle school. She is recognized as one of the most promising trombonists in her band, quickly becoming a principal player, and is considered comparable to talents like Reina Kousaka in her performances. Her perfectionism and desire for self-improvement drive her constant practice and refinement. Outside of music, her special skills include having a keen sense for editing photos from purikura photo booth machines, and she enjoys bowling, a hobby she picked up from going with her mother when she was younger.
