Description
Kanne is a third-class mage who participates in the First-Class Mage Exam held in the magic city of Oisarts. She is a young, petite girl with short orange hair typically styled into two pigtails and matching orange eyes. Her usual outfit consists of a bare-midriff white top with puffy sleeves and bright green shorts, a distinctive fashion choice that reflects her lively personality. When casting spells, she uses a long, straight staff with a jeweled center and three crystalline prongs.

Kanne is bright, friendly, and easy-going, able to chat casually with others including Frieren and Fern when she first meets them. However, beneath this sociable exterior, she harbors a deeply timid and easily frightened nature, especially when facing overwhelming opponents or pressure. This fear becomes particularly apparent when she confronts situations like practicing flight magic, where she once became paralyzed with anxiety while her peers advanced. Kanne possesses the notable trait of growing stronger and more competent when praised and encouraged. According to her childhood friend Lawine, this characteristic may stem from being spoiled by her parents during her upbringing, though Lawine also acknowledges that Kanne tries very hard despite being a coward, works diligently when others are not watching, and is genuinely considerate of others' well-being.

Her central relationship is with Lawine, her childhood friend and fellow academy graduate. The two share an intensely combative yet deeply trusting dynamic characterized by constant bickering and physical fights, typically with Lawine tackling Kanne and pulling her pigtails as punishment for tactless comments. Despite their frequent clashes and Kanne's claims of disliking Lawine, she recognizes that Lawine is the one who pulls her forward and forces her to act when she would otherwise hesitate. This dynamic has deep roots; during their academy days, when Kanne was stuck and unable to perform flight magic, Lawine encouraged her with praise and ultimately kicked her off a cliff toward water below, the push Kanne needed to finally use her magic. Their relationship is so famously volatile that onlookers often compare watching them to observing a grandmother watching her grandchildren fight.

Kanne specializes in water-manipulation magic known as Riemstrowa, which allows her to control existing bodies of water. This power comes with significant limitations. She cannot create water herself, making her dependent on natural water sources or wet environments, and she is unable to manipulate the water inside living bodies because she cannot form a clear mental image of how water is distributed within organisms. Additionally, she cannot simply melt Lawine's ice constructs to create usable water, mentally classifying them as ice rather than water. In dry environments or enclosed areas without water, her abilities are severely restricted. However, this limitation transforms into an enormous advantage when water is plentiful, especially during rainfall, where her combat potential increases dramatically and she can defeat even higher-ranked mages in a single decisive strike.

During the First-Class Mage Exam, Kanne is assigned to Party 2 alongside Frieren and Lawine. In the first test, she initially struggles, awakening at night to investigate a sound and being ambushed by a Geisel that knocks away her staff, forcing her to call out for Lawine before Frieren rescues her. Kanne provides crucial intelligence after hearing rain falling against the anti-matter barrier erected around the exam grounds, information that becomes central to Frieren's strategy to capture the Stille. When the Thirteenth Party attacks and Richter separates Kanne and Lawine from Frieren, the two are initially outmatched. But when Frieren breaks the barrier, allowing rain to pour down, the situation reverses. Lawine freezes Richter's hands to the ground, and Kanne gathers a massive sphere of rainwater using Riemstrowa, dropping it onto Richter and crushing his defense magic, defeating him. Their party successfully passes the first stage.

Between exam stages, Kanne demonstrates genuine gratitude, purchasing a basket of treats and presenting them to Frieren as thanks for helping her and Lawine pass the first test. When Lawine appears dressed in fancy clothes, Kanne cheekily offers to be her escort, only to be tackled and have her pigtails pulled in response. In the second test within the Ruins of the King's Tomb, Kanne and Lawine use intel from Lawine's eldest brother to progress far into the dungeon. They join forces with other examinees, with Kanne teaming up with another mage to fight a clone of Richter. Kanne successfully passes the second test, while Lawine fails, demonstrating her capacity to endure and advance even without her partner by her side.

The third test proves to be her limit. When called before the legendary mage Serie, who serves as examiner, Kanne is overtaken by fear at the sheer overwhelming magical power emanating from Serie. Serie immediately fails her, explaining that Kanne cannot envision herself becoming a first-class mage, and in the world of magic, what cannot be envisioned cannot be. This failure is not due to lack of magical talent but to the psychological barrier Kanne cannot overcome in that moment. After the privilege conferment ceremony, Kanne sits on the steps of the Northern Continental Magic Association, musing that the next exam will be in three more years. Despite her disappointment, she remains in high spirits when seeing Frieren's party depart from Oisarts, thanking Frieren for her help and declaring that she will try again in three years.

Kanne's development throughout the exam arc highlights both her impressive potential and the internal barriers that hold her back from the highest rank. She is defined by the tension between her innate timidity and her capacity to rise to challenges when properly supported and encouraged, with her comedic yet deeply loyal relationship with Lawine serving as the engine that often pushes her forward. Her name is derived from the German word for water jug or pitcher, a thematic nod to her magical specialty.
