Description
Charlotte Evans is the female protagonist of the story, a young noblewoman from the Kingdom of Neruz who finds her life overturned by betrayal and false accusations.
Her background is one of hardship and isolation. Charlotte is the illegitimate daughter of a duke and a maid, a status that defined her miserable upbringing. After her mother's death, she was brought into the ducal household where she was never treated as a true family member. Instead, she was forced to perform chores alongside the servants while still being subjected to strict lessons in noble礼仪. Her father was largely indifferent to her suffering, and her stepmother was cruel, leaving her only ally as her half-sister, Natalia Evans. This bleak childhood was devoid of happiness or proper hobbies, to the point that receiving half-rotten fruit from her sister was a rare moment of joy she could recall. Her situation seemed to improve when she was engaged to the second prince, Cecil, but this hope was shattered when he falsely accused her of the attempted assassination of the king. The engagement was annulled, and she was branded a criminal, forced to flee for her life.
In terms of personality, Charlotte is defined by her extraordinary gentleness and purity. Despite the immense cruelty and abuse she has endured, including physical violence that left scars on her back, she harbors no hatred or desire for revenge against her family or former fiancé. Her difficult past has made her inherently incapable of selfishness, rudeness, or asserting her own desires. She lives a life of self-denial, constantly feeling she would be a burden to others and struggling to understand the concept of personal happiness. She is quiet, modest, and extremely hardworking, with a disciplined nature shaped by her years of servitude under the guise of nobility. This has left her with almost no sense of enjoyment and no idea how to be "naughty" or even simply carefree.
Her motivations shift throughout the narrative as a direct result of her rescue. Initially, her primary motivation is simply survival and finding a place where she is safe from those who hunt her. Once taken in by Allen Crawford, her initial motivation is not to be a burden, which is why she offers to work as a housekeeper. However, the central motivation that drives the story is her learning process. Allen, appalled by her inability to be happy or selfish, makes it his mission to give her a "crash course in naughtiness," which in practice means teaching her to indulge in life's simple pleasures. Charlotte's role, therefore, is to be the student of happiness, gradually discovering what it means to enjoy things like eating cake for dinner, playing, and having her own wishes fulfilled.
Her key relationships are the core of her development. The most significant is with Allen Crawford, a reclusive and powerful mage known as the "Dark Lord" who finds her collapsed in the forest. He rescues her and offers her a home, placing a death curse on himself to force her to accept his help when her instinct is to refuse. She views him as a profoundly kind and good person, feeling immense gratitude and trust toward him. For her, he is the catalyst for her new life and the one who guides her toward understanding happiness. She is deeply concerned, however, by his tendency to not value his own life. Another important relationship is with Allen's sister, Eluka Crawford, who becomes a friend and ally in helping Charlotte experience the joys of ordinary life. Her one positive link to her past is her half-sister Natalia, who was her source of comfort in the Evans household. Conversely, her relationship with Prince Cecil represents her past trauma; he is the man who betrayed her for a crime she did not commit.
Over the course of the story, Charlotte undergoes significant development. She starts as a fragile, traumatized young woman who has been completely stripped of her agency and sense of self-worth. As Allen and Eluka patiently encourage her, she slowly begins to shed her ingrained habits of self-denial. She learns to smile, to voice her opinions, and to recognize her own value as a person deserving of kindness and pleasure. By the end of the anime, her feelings for Allen deepen beyond gratitude, confirming a romantic attachment. She transitions from a passive victim to someone who can actively embrace life and form her own desires.
A notable and unique ability Charlotte possesses is a natural talent as a monster tamer. All animals and magical beasts are instinctively drawn to her and show her affection and protection. This ability is so profound that while it took Allen six months to learn the most basic monster language, Charlotte was able to interpret it fluently in just one day. Even powerful creatures like the divine beast Luu and the infernal capybara Gosetsu readily communicate with her. This talent sets her apart and becomes a key part of her identity. In terms of appearance, she is a beautiful young woman with long blonde hair and green eyes, though Allen uses magic to dye her hair black when she is outside his home to hide her identity from her pursuers.
