Description
Miya Chinen is a first-year middle school student and an elite candidate for the Japanese national skateboarding team. He possesses remarkable technical skill, enabling him to perform difficult tricks with ease. His skating style is highly precise and incorporates video game–inspired terminology, reflecting his avid interest in gaming. On the surface, Miya appears carefree and sometimes cocky or arrogant, but this demeanor is largely a defense mechanism rooted in a painful past. As a young child, he genuinely loved skating and enjoyed the activity. However, after he began winning awards and improving rapidly, his former friends came to believe he looked down on them and eventually abandoned him. This experience left Miya with a deep fear of abandonment and a cynical, negative outlook on friendship. He began skating primarily for self-improvement and competition rather than for fun, guarding himself from emotional closeness.

Miya’s motivations are driven by a desire to prove his talent and avoid being left behind again. He can be dismissive and blunt toward others upon first meeting, such as when he calls Reki Kyan a “slime.” He dislikes showing vulnerability and often hides his true feelings behind a confident exterior. Alongside his skateboarding prowess, Miya has a notable ability to communicate with cats, revealing a softer side beneath his prickly shell.

In the overall narrative, Miya starts as a rival to the main characters Langa Hasegawa and Reki Kyan. He is initially indifferent to social connections, but after losing a race to Langa, Reki comforts him and promises that he and Langa will not abandon him like his old friends did. This moment marks a turning point; Miya begins to open up and forms a genuine friendship with the pair. Over time, he develops a sibling-like rivalry with Reki and Langa, often teasing them while secretly valuing their companionship. He also looks up to older skaters such as Cherry Blossom and Joe as senior figures in the underground skateboarding scene known as S.

Miya’s character development centers on moving from an isolated, cynical prodigy to someone who understands that skating is more enjoyable when shared with friends. By the events of the Extra Part, he has become a permanent fixture in Reki and Langa’s social circle, regaining his ability to trust others. His fear of abandonment can still affect his concentration and emotional state during high-pressure races, but he learns to balance pride with humility. Miya’s primary ability remains his extraordinary skateboarding talent, which he uses to execute complex maneuvers with precision. His unique trait of talking to cats further distinguishes him and underscores his hidden gentleness.
