Description
Kim Lurker is a character who appears early in the second part of the Tower of God story, serving as the first major antagonist encountered on the 20th Floor. He works as a shylock and an assistant manager for a loan company called Lurker Cash, a position that perfectly suits his cold-blooded and violent personality. In his first appearance, he breaks into the apartment of the Regular Ja Wangnan, uses Shinsoo to slam him into the ground, and then intimidates him into signing a fraudulent contract disguised as a beautifying diet, which is actually an agreement to sell his organs if he fails the next exam. Physically, Kim Lurker has pale white skin, grey eyes, and black hair, and he is often seen with a flower, possibly a daisy, on the left side of his head, wearing a bordeaux trenchcoat over a black jumper.
Kim Lurkers personality is defined by his sadistic and two-faced nature. He is frequently seen with a permanent, smug smile, believing that his team is unbeatable. He is not afraid to use extreme violence to intimidate clients and force them into agreements, and he has a habit of borrowing others strength to do his dirty work, whether by employing brute force in the form of Da-an bodyguards, tricking someone like Nya Nia, or using a controlled Yeon Yihwa to attack his enemies. While he acts as a sycophantic servant to his bosss son, whom he addresses as Young Master, he ultimately betrays him without hesitation when it appears more profitable.
His central motivation stems from his own broken dreams. Lurker reveals that he was once like Ja Wangnan, accumulating significant debt in his desperate attempt to climb the Tower. Unable to pass the test or repay the money, he begged the president of the company for his life and was given his current job as a loan shark instead. His bitterness deepens when the president asks him to help his son, Prince, climb the Tower, explaining that he spent his entire fortune bribing the test administrators on the 20th Floor. This knowledge poisons Lurker, as he realizes his own dreams were crushed not by fate, but by the corrupt ambitions of others.
In the story arc The Return of the Prince, Kim Lurkers role is that of a manipulative antagonist. He accompanies Prince to the same test as Ja Wangnan, confident in his plan to secure a team for Prince while eliminating the competition. During the Trustworthy Room test, he reveals his true colors by betraying Prince, using a controlled Yeon Yihwa and his bodyguards to seize control of the teams dorms. He coldly murders Nya Nia, a young Regular he had been using as an informant, showing his complete lack of remorse. His key relationships are defined by exploitation and power. He has a subservient but resentful relationship with his boss and Prince, a manipulative and murderous relationship with his pawn Nya Nia, and a confrontational relationship with Ja Wangnan, who ultimately becomes his judge.
However, Kim Lurker experiences a moment of forced development in defeat. When confronted by an enraged Ja Wangnan who intends to kill him for Nias murder, Lurker laughs and exposes the hypocrisy he sees in Wangnans talk of justice, arguing that they are both the same kind of murderer. He lays out his cynical worldview, stating that within the Tower there are only prey and those who prey on them, and that there is no point in resenting anyone because everyone destroys anothers dream to pursue their own. He is left visibly stunned and unsure how to react when Ja Wangnan, instead of killing him, decides to forgive him, an act that completely contradicts his understanding of how the Tower works.
Notably, Kim Lurker is a Regular who cannot use Shinsoo on his own. He requires a buzzer-like wand that he hides in his pocket to manipulate Shinsoo; without it, he is powerless. With this wand, he can cover his hand in Shinsoo to grant it enhanced strength, allowing him to easily destroy doorknobs. He can also project the Shinsoo to form a large, invisible hand that can hold down enemies or crush them with the precision of a scalpel. Despite going lightly on Ja Wangnan, his ability to easily murder another Regular suggests that his power level is far above that of an ordinary 20th Floor Regular.
