Description
Karaka is a formidable character who serves as a Slayer, an elite assassin, for the secretive organization known as FUG. He is a High Ranker, placing him among the most powerful beings within the Tower's hierarchy, and is recognized as one of the youngest individuals to ever achieve the rank of Slayer. Despite his relative youth for such a high position, he has quickly amassed significant influence, a personal army, and a fearsome reputation, becoming a rising star of evil and a major threat acknowledged even by the Zahard Empire.
Very little is known about Karaka’s true appearance, as he is almost always seen concealed within a full suit of dark, spell-enhanced armor and a mask. Through this mask, only his piercing yellow eyes are visible. His personality is that of a hard-line extremist, advocating for swift, ruthless action against Zahard and his empire, with little regard for moral obstacles. He is cold, calculating, and pragmatic, often viewing others, including fellow FUG members, as tools to be used for the organization's goals. He also seems to put his own agenda first and holds enough political power to influence or challenge even the Elders of FUG. Despite this冷酷 exterior, Karaka possesses a softer side, which he reserves almost exclusively for his teacher, Ha Jinsung, to whom he shows deep care, respect, and loyalty.
Karaka’s primary motivation, like all Slayers, is the destruction of Zahard and the current imperial system of the Tower. A key part of this goal involves obtaining the legendary Thorn, a weapon powerful enough to kill an immortal King. He initially views the Slayer Candidate, Jyu Viole Grace, who is later revealed to be the Irregular Twenty-Fifth Baam, as nothing more than a vessel to be melted down and used to power the Thorn. His actions are driven by a desire to see FUG's long-cherished wishes fulfilled, and he is often the one advocating for the most direct and often cruelest methods to achieve them.
In the story arc Tower of God: Return of the Prince, Karaka makes his first significant appearance moving out of the shadows. During a clandestine meeting with his master, Ha Jinsung, on the 21st Floor, he reveals a key aspect of his role and personality. Directly opposing the more patient and long-term strategy of Jinsung, Karaka argues that Viole’s teammates, including Ja Wangnan and others, are a liability and should be killed to prevent them from being a distraction or a weakness. He expresses his distrust of Jinsung's plan and relays that other Slayers and Elders share his concerns. Although he defers to his master's authority, agreeing to follow his plan, Karaka immediately takes independent action, ordering his subordinate, Poken, to have the team watched and executed if they show any suspicious behavior. This scene establishes him as a powerful, impatient, and dangerous figure who is not afraid to question authority while simultaneously pursuing his own harsh solutions to further FUG's cause.
His key relationships are complex and heavily influence his development. His relationship with his master, Ha Jinsung, is the most significant. Karaka is intensely loyal to Jinsung, who trained him in martial arts and gifted him his powerful armor. He is visibly shocked and angered by the news of Jinsung's apparent death, and this event is a major factor in his later decision to protect, rather than eliminate, Baam, simply because Jinsung had chosen him. His relationship with Twenty-Fifth Baam is initially antagonistic, viewing him with disdain as a weak Regular and a rival for Jinsung's attention. However, over time and through shared battles, especially at the Last Station, he begrudgingly accepts Baam as part of Jinsung’s will and an asset to FUG, leading to a complex dynamic that shifts from wanting to kill him to fighting alongside him. He also has a close working relationship with his own subordinates, such as the Death Lady, who serves as a confidante and sometimes questions his rash decisions.
Throughout his appearances, Karaka shows a distinct development in his perspective. He begins as a primary antagonist who sees Baam as a disposable tool. After witnessing Baam’s power, drive, and the faith Jinsung placed in him, he gradually transitions into a reluctant ally. His single-minded goal of obtaining the Thorn expands to include avenging and rescuing his master, aligning his path with Baam’s for the first time. This evolution does not soften his brutal nature but redirects his formidable will toward a common enemy.
Karaka is an immensely powerful combatant with a number of notable abilities. He was originally a Scout-Fisherman hybrid, a unique combination that allows him to fight independently. As a Scout, one of his skills is the ability to read the minds of others, including the deceased, by placing his hands on their head. His true strength, however, lies in his incredible defense and near-immortality. His primary technique is the Karaka Style Shinsu Manipulation Technique World of Darkness, which creates numerous black orbs of shinsu that can absorb enemy attacks, including both physical and energy-based ones, and can even trap the attacker themselves. He can then redirect all the accumulated damage back at his opponent with a technique called Damage Counter Rain of Darkness. Furthermore, he can use the ability Infinite Past Lives to be reborn from a different point in time, effectively negating any fatal damage he may have sustained.
Karaka’s armor suit also grants him a pocket dimension called Karaka’s Heart, where his actual physical heart is hidden. As long as this heart remains intact and inaccessible, he cannot truly be killed, as no one can enter the dimension without the permission of a Guardian or a Family Head. The armor itself is highly versatile, with long, blade-like tendrils he can control for both offense and defense. He has developed several techniques with it, such as Armor Inventory Steel Tree for protection and Flower of Darkness Black Lotus for piercing attacks. For offense, he uses Karaka Style Piercing Technique White Crow, a version of his master's technique that transfers a powerful, vibrating shock of shinsu into a target to cause internal destruction. With his overwhelming defensive capabilities, a vast array of powers, and a will of iron, Karaka stands as one of the most dangerous and enduring figures in the Tower.
