Description
The character referred to as Raul in some international releases of Fist of the North Star is the warrior Raoh, also romanized as Raou, who is known within the story by the titles Ken-oh, meaning King of Fists, and the Supreme Ruler or Conqueror of the Century's End. He is the eldest of the four Hokuto brothers, the adopted sons of the martial arts master Ryuken, and one of the central figures of the franchise.
Raoh was born in the Land of Shura as the biological older brother of Toki and the biological younger brother of Kaioh. According to the fuller version of his origin, he, Toki, and the infant Kenshiro were sent from their war-torn homeland to be raised and trained by Ryuken in the assassination art of Hokuto Shinken. He trained alongside Toki, Kenshiro, and another student named Jagi, and grew into a physically towering and extraordinarily powerful fighter. Despite his ambition to become the greatest martial artist alive, Ryuken chose Kenshiro as the official successor of Hokuto Shinken. Raoh refused to accept this decision and would not surrender his fists as the rules of the school required of those who lost the succession. He killed his master in combat and left to forge his own path, eventually building a vast army, conquering the fortress city of Cassandra, and declaring himself Ken-oh.
In personality, Raoh is defined by immense pride, overwhelming ambition, and an unshakable conviction that strength alone can bring order to a ruined world. He views conquest as a form of salvation, believing that only an absolute ruler can end the chaos of the wasteland, and he seeks to dominate not only the world but also what he calls the heavens. Through his encounter with the hermit Fudoh and his decision regarding Yuria, he learns that sorrow and compassion are necessary for complete mastery, and he successfully acquires Muso Tensei himself. In his final battle with Kenshiro at the Hokuto Renkitōza, the training ground of the school, he is defeated but accepts his loss with dignity, acknowledging the strength Kenshiro earned through his own struggles. In his last act, he releases his remaining life energy into the heavens to restore light to the world and declares that he has no regrets for the life he lived, cementing his transformation from conqueror to a figure of tragic nobility.
