Description
Gregory Sunshine is a character from the anime Tiger & Bunny 2, acting as a significant antagonist in the second season's narrative arc.
He is a convicted criminal who was serving a life sentence for his past actions in a different city before the events of the series. Gregory is a NEXT, an individual possessing superhuman abilities. His specific power is the dangerous capability to cause another NEXT's abilities to go wild and become uncontrollable, a process described as berserkification. This ability requires physical contact with the target to activate. An unusual condition of his power is that his saliva is the catalyst for its activation, a trait that leads him to consume large amounts of alcohol to produce enough saliva when needed.
Gregory's role in the story is that of a primary instigator for the central conflict of Tiger & Bunny 2's second half. He is taken to a laboratory to be used as a test subject by Sigourney Rosicky, a high-ranking member of the secretive organization Ouroboros. She forces him to use his abilities on another subject and then injects him with an experimental drug designed to amplify NEXT powers. Having witnessed the drug's effectiveness and understanding its value, Gregory seizes an opportunity to escape, steals the remaining samples of the drug, and arms himself with a gun. During his escape, he demonstrates his ruthlessness by shooting and killing fellow Ouroboros members Fugan and Mugan, as well as seriously wounding Nicolai Brahe.
After escaping into Sternbild City, Gregory uses the stolen drug to amplify his own ability, which he then employs to create widespread chaos. He touches other NEXTs, forcing their powers to go out of control and turning them into violent, rampaging individuals known as "X"s. This phenomenon generates mass hysteria and fear of NEXTs within the general population, furthering Ouroboros's agenda of sowing division. At one point, he even infiltrates Abbas Prison, frees the inmates, and uses his power on many of them, unleashing havoc on the city. He is directly responsible for causing the hero Kotetsu T. Kaburagi, also known as Tiger, to lose control of his powers and attack his partner, an event that ultimately leads to Tiger's NEXT abilities being completely depleted.
Gregory's personality is characterized by cruelty, opportunism, and a love for the chaos he creates. He kills without hesitation to achieve his goals and shows a callous disregard for the lives of others, including his supposed allies. His motivations appear to be primarily self-serving: he seeks to avoid imprisonment, gain power through the stolen drug, and revel in the disorder he causes. While he acts as a tool for Sigourney Rosicky and Ouroboros, his independent and unpredictable nature makes him a volatile asset. His key relationships are antagonistic throughout the story. He is a test subject for Sigourney Rosicky, a target for the heroes trying to stop the X phenomenon, and a murderer to Nicolai Brahe and his associates.
Gregory's development in the story concludes with his capture by the heroes Ryan and Rose after a civilian reports his location. While being transported, the driver of the truck carrying him, following orders from an unknown source to silence him, deliberately drives the vehicle off the road, causing a crash that kills Gregory. With his death, all the NEXTs affected by his power immediately return to normal.
