Description
Misumi Tozawa, known by her in-game name Mito, is a movie-original character introduced in Sword Art Online the Movie - Progressive - Aria of a Starless Night and continues her role in the sequel Scherzo of Deep Night. In the real world, she was a student at the Eterna Girls’ Academy Junior High, where she was a top academic performer, athletic, and an avid gamer. She developed a close friendship with her classmate Yuuki Asuna and was one of the thousand beta testers for the virtual reality MMORPG Sword Art Online. When the game launched in November 2022, Mito encouraged Asuna to log in and play together, and the two were among the ten thousand players trapped by the death game.

Mito’s personality initially comes across as confident, resourceful, and protective. As a beta tester, she possessed advanced knowledge of the game’s mechanics and used it to help Asuna level up quickly. However, during a dangerous monster encounter on the first floor, Mito panicked when Asuna’s health dropped critically low. Fearing for her own life, she disbanded their party and fled, believing Asuna had been killed. This act of self-preservation became a deep source of guilt and shame for Mito. In the aftermath, she became a solo clearer, distancing herself from Asuna and others. Her motivations in the game shifted from simply surviving and escaping to atoning for her betrayal, as well as contributing to the overall effort to clear the floors.

In the first film, Aria of a Starless Night, Mito participates in the raid against the first floor boss and later apologizes to Asuna, but Asuna chooses to follow her own path with Kirito, leaving their friendship unresolved. In Scherzo of Deep Night, set several floors later, Mito is still haunted by her past actions. When Kirito and Asuna attempt to recruit her for a raid against the fifth floor boss, she refuses out of lingering shame and regret. Despite this, she secretly follows the group and eventually appears at a critical moment to rescue Asuna during the boss fight. This intervention signals her growth in overcoming fear and her willingness to put herself at risk for others, particularly for the friend she once abandoned.

Mito’s role in the story is that of a deuteragonist and a foil to Asuna. She represents the harsh reality that not all relationships survive the trauma of the death game, but also the possibility of redemption and reconciliation. Her key relationships are with Asuna, whom she deeply cares for but struggles to face, and with Kirito, who serves as an indirect bridge between them. Though she works alone for much of the narrative, she aligns herself with the clearer community and fights in major boss battles when the need arises.

Notable abilities stem from her beta tester experience, giving her an edge in combat and knowledge of enemy patterns. She is a skilled front-line fighter, adept with a rapier, and in Scherzo of Deep Night she adopts a new outfit with a ninja or assassin aesthetic, focusing on mobility and stealth. This change in appearance reflects her more solitary, covert approach to the game. Over the course of both films, Mito develops from a guilt‑ridden loner to a more self‑sacrificing ally, willing to intervene despite personal cost, leaving her future relationship with Asuna open to possibility.
