Description
Lucoa, whose true name is Quetzalcoatl, is a former dragon goddess and a supporting character in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S. In the ancient past, she was worshipped as a deity and was known for bringing culture and farming knowledge to humans. She lost her divine status centuries ago after drinking a cursed liquor that led her into a scandalous affair with her younger sister, an incident that remains a secret she prefers to keep hidden. This fall from godhood set the stage for her eventual arrival in the human world.
In the present day, Lucoa was summoned by an elementary school student named Shouta, who was attempting a demon summoning ritual. She answered the call and has since lived in the attic of his house, acting as his familiar. Her human form is that of a tall, voluptuous woman with long blonde hair, heterochromia with her left eye appearing dark with a yellow pupil and her right eye green, and a tendency to wear very revealing outfits that often draw attention. She maintains her dragon appearance through features such as horns and a tail in human form.
Lucoa’s personality is defined by a calm, easygoing, and perpetually smiling demeanor. She is rarely seen without a smile, which contrasts with the deep wisdom she carries as an ancient being. She is nurturing, kind-hearted, and playful, often teasing Shouta with affectionate but seductive gestures. Despite her mischievous side, she is fiercely loyal to her friends and holds a deep respect for peace, refusing to fight without need. She cares especially for Tohru, whom she has known for many years, and for the younger dragons such as Kanna, whom she looks after with genuine affection. Lucoa is also a boku-girl, referring to herself using the pronoun boku in Japanese, which adds to her distinctive voice.
Her motivation is to live peacefully among humans and enjoy her newfound life while supporting those she cares about. She does not seek to regain her divine status and appears content with her role as Shouta’s familiar and a wise elder to the other dragons. She often offers gentle advice to younger dragons like Tohru and helps mediate conflicts, using her ancient experience to guide them without being overbearing.
In the story, Lucoa serves as a source of both comic relief and maternal warmth. Her exaggerated appearance and flirtatious behavior create many humorous moments, particularly in her interactions with Shouta, who is often embarrassed by her advances. At the same time, she acts as a stabilizing presence among the more volatile dragons, offering counsel and emotional support. Her relationship with Tohru is that of old friends who share a long history, and she treats Kanna like a beloved younger family member. Lucoa also gets along well with other humans in the cast, such as Kobayashi, and her friendly nature makes her a bridge between the dragon and human worlds.
Over the course of the series, her development remains subtle. She does not undergo a major transformation but instead deepens her bonds with the human characters and fully embraces her place in the mundane world. Her ancient past as a goddess is occasionally referenced, reminding others of her immense power, but she prefers to use her abilities for simple, practical purposes or playful tricks. Among her notable abilities are powerful dragon magic, the capacity to shift between dragon and human forms, flight, and various elemental powers inherited from her mythological origin. She is also shown to have a vast knowledge of magic and history, which she sometimes imparts to Shouta in her own laid-back way. Despite her fallen status, she remains one of the most powerful beings in the series, though she chooses not to flaunt it.
