Description
Haseura Haruma is a pivotal character in Shadowverse Flame, serving as a significant antagonist and foil to the main protagonist, Light Tenryu. A 14-year-old second-year student at Shadowverse Battle College, Haruma stands 172 centimeters tall and weighs 61 kilograms, with a birth date of August 8th. His appearance is striking and unconventional, featuring tanned skin, purple hair styled with distinctive streaks, and orange eyes. He accessorizes with a necklace, belt, and tie, and is rarely seen without a piece of candy in his mouth, which he habitually crushes between his teeth.

Haruma is the captain and founder of the First Reaper, a club notorious for its aggressive and ruthless tactics. He is portrayed as ferocious and intimidating, feared by many students for his tremendous skills and his practice of crushing weaker opponents and forcing them to quit the game. His aggressive and mocking demeanor hides deep-seated psychological trauma stemming from his past defeats at the hands of the student council president, Mikado Shirogane. Having experienced the pain of being utterly trampled despite his best efforts, Haruma developed a strong aversion to losing, equating it with despair and weakness. His actions as a bully are a defense mechanism; he believes that by trampling others first, he will no longer be the one being trampled.

His motivations are rooted in a cynical worldview where strength is the only thing that matters. He despises players who find joy in the game or strive to improve despite being weak, viewing such attitudes as foolish. Haruma seeks to impose his harsh "reality" on others, believing that by humiliating them and destroying their will to play, he is teaching them a necessary lesson. This philosophy puts him into direct conflict with Light Tenryu and the Seventh Flame club, which he had previously driven to the brink of collapse. Early in the story, he confronts and easily defeats Light, mocking his optimism and lack of experience.

Despite his antagonistic role, Haruma is not a one-dimensional villain. His key relationships reveal his complexity. He shares a significant, strained history with Mikado Shirogane, whose strength he both fears and despises. His rivalry with Light Tenryu is central to his development; Light's persistent belief in understanding Haruma through battle and his refusal to give up force Haruma to confront his own demons. In their final match of the Shadowverse Club Tournament, Light defeats Haruma, who despairs at the loss but is unable to accept Light's offered hand or words about the value of bonds and effort. He also has a strong sense of responsibility toward his own club members, Maya and Erina, who remain loyal to him despite his flaws and the club's tarnished reputation.

Throughout the series, Haruma undergoes subtle but meaningful development. After his defeat, he becomes more withdrawn but later faces the prospect of the First Reaper's disbandment. When he attempts to quietly leave the academy, other characters like Tatsumi Raido and his own members hold him accountable, insisting he not run away from his identity as a Shadowverse player. Eventually, he shows growth by reluctantly cooperating with other club leaders to face a common threat and, following the final conflict, decides to revive the First Reaper, welcoming new members.

In battle, Haruma is a formidable tactician who uses a Shadowcraft deck. His playstyle focuses on aggressive field expansion and leveraging the Necromancy mechanic. He excels at destroying his own followers to activate powerful Last Words effects, accumulating shadows in the graveyard to fuel his abilities. His signature ace card is Deathscythe Hound, a legendary follower he uses to decisively overwhelm his opponents.
