Description
Sunakake Baba, also called Sand Throwing Hag or Sand Witch, serves as an adviser to Kitaro and his companions. This elderly yōkai woman claims an age of approximately 2,800 years, though some sources cite 1,200, and boasts participation in Empress Jingu's 3rd-century invasion of Korea.

She first appeared in a cameo within the 1961 manga chapter "A Walk to Hell," with her official debut happening in "The Great Yōkai War" storyline. Killed during the battle against Western yōkai—specifically by Dracula's vampire minions in the anime—she later reappeared in subsequent episodes and chapters without explanation.

Physically, she resembles an old woman with large eyes, long hair featuring a distinctive lock between her eyes, and skin described as rough like sandpaper, often covered in specks of sand. She typically wears a kimono.

Her primary fighting ability involves throwing sand mixed with special ingredients to produce effects like blinding enemies. She also wields a powerful slap and possesses skills in yōkai medicine, alchemy, and soothsaying. In some stories, she extends her hair like an antenna to receive telepathic messages.

She manages the Yōkai Apartments (or Yōkai Yokochō apartment in later adaptations), providing shelter for homeless yōkai. Notable residents include Konaki-Jijii, Kitaro, and Medama-Oyaji. Notoriously strict about rent due to frugality, she negotiates alternative payments, accepting rare star sand from Kawauso or umbrellas from Kasa-Bake. She shows leniency to impoverished yōkai, allowing them to work off debts.

Her personality blends grouchiness and a quick temper with underlying kindness and a strong sense of justice. She often criticizes humans as greedy and dangerous but displays gentleness toward human children. Her closest relationship is with Konaki-Jijii; their frequent companionship has led to fan speculation they are a couple or married. During a yōkai pop culture boom, they performed as a comedy duo on television.

In folklore, she is an invisible spirit from Nara and Hyōgo prefectures who throws sand at shrine passersby. This origin contrasts with her series portrayal, where she underwent Adaptational Heroism, transforming from a traditionally malicious figure into a benevolent one aligned with Kitaro's cause.

She has distant relatives among international sand entities, including the Central Asian Ekiseru and Germany's Sandman. Both opposed Kitaro during their appearances, though she was absent from Sandman's storyline.

Within broader franchise lore, she is recognized as one of Japan's 47 Yōkai Warriors, representing Nara Prefecture with a mark on her left hand.
