Description
Taishiro Toyomitsu, known as the BMI Hero Fatgum, is a professional hero who primarily operates in the Kansai region of Japan, including the city of Osaka. He is a large, rotund man whose appearance is so round and soft that it draws comparisons to a Matryoshka doll. Despite his immense size, which typically towers over other adults, his build is not permanent; extensive combat can burn through his protective fat layer, revealing a surprisingly lean, muscular, and conventionally handsome physique underneath. His hero costume consists of a zippered orange hood, black pants, metallic boots, and a mask that covers his forehead and eyes.
Fatgum presents a personality that is as large and welcoming as his frame. He is almost constantly eating to maintain his energy, and he approaches his work with a friendly and playful demeanor towards both civilians and fellow heroes. He speaks with a warm and accessible style, often coming across as a boisterous and kind-hearted older brother figure. However, this carefree attitude masks the serious work ethic of a seasoned professional. When a situation demands it, particularly when lives are on the line, he becomes incredibly focused, serious, and even impulsive, growing impatient with lengthy or overly cautious operations. His core philosophy as a hero is to eliminate a villain's will to fight as quickly as possible without creating any victims, prioritizing swift, decisive captures over prolonged battles.
His motivation stems from a deep-seated commitment to doing the right thing and protecting others. This drive is so strong that it can manifest as righteous anger when innocent people are in danger. This has led him to take on a significant role as a mentor to younger heroes-in-training. He sees great potential in others, as demonstrated when he took Tamaki Amajiki under his wing and later accepted Eijiro Kirishima as an intern on Tamaki's recommendation. Despite his tough love approach, which Tamaki sometimes perceives as harassment, Fatgum holds his student's abilities in the highest regard, trusting him to handle multiple enemies on his own. His relationship with Kirishima is particularly strong; he is deeply impressed by Kirishima's unbreakable spirit, and the two form a powerful bond during their shared battles.
Fatgum plays a crucial role in the story during the Shie Hassaikai arc. His past experience working closely with the police on cases involving illegal Quirk-enhancing drugs makes him an invaluable asset when the heroes investigate the yakuza group. During the raid on their base, he and Kirishima are separated from the main group and forced to fight two of the Eight Expendables, the powerful pugilist Kendo Rappa and the barrier user Tengai. In this intense battle, Fatgum's abilities are pushed to their limit. He uses his body as a shield, absorbing Rappa's devastating barrages of punches, storing the kinetic energy. Once he has taken enough damage and burned through his defensive fat, he unleashes a concentrated, explosive counterattack—a technique called the Spear—that defeats both enemies in a single, devastating blow. This fight serves as a major moment of development for both him and Kirishima, as Fatgum learns to trust his young partner's resolve, and Kirishima finds a hero who exemplifies his own ideals of manliness.
Fatgum's notable abilities are entirely defined by his Quirk, Fat Absorption. In his normal obese state, his body can absorb and adhere to almost anything, allowing him to trap villains by simply grabbing them and causing them to sink into his fat. More importantly, this fat can absorb kinetic energy from physical impacts or explosions, storing it and protecting his body from harm. The true power of this Quirk is offensive; by burning through his stored fat as fuel, he can convert all the absorbed kinetic energy into raw, immense strength and release it in a single, concentrated strike, transforming him into his slim form. While this makes him incredibly powerful, it is a double-edged sword, as his high defense is lost once the attack is spent, leaving him temporarily vulnerable. His past cooperation with police forces and his extensive knowledge of the underworld's drug trade further round out his capabilities as a hero who is as strategically savvy as he is physically formidable.
