Description
Fumikage Tokoyami, also known by his hero name Tsukuyomi, the Jet-Black Hero, is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School. He is a young man with a very distinctive appearance: his head is that of a black bird, complete with a sharp yellow beak and red eyes, though the black parts of his head are actually hair rather than feathers. From the neck down, he has a normal human body. He often wears a red choker around his neck and his hero costume consists of a large, dark purple-black cloak designed to block out light, worn over dark clothing.
Tokoyami has a calm, serious, and focused personality. He is generally stoic and does not display emotions as openly as many of his classmates. He speaks in a somewhat old-fashioned, dramatic manner, often using grandiose or philosophical phrases like "revelry in the dark" or referring to a "banquet of darkness." This tendency, combined with his gothic aesthetic and love of dark, shadowy places, gives him the air of a classic chuunibyo, or someone who indulges in fantastical, middle-schooler-esque delusions of grandeur. Despite this edgy exterior, he is humble, respectful, and noble. He shows good sportsmanship, such as when he bowed to his opponent Momo Yaoyorozu after defeating her in the U.A. Sports Festival. He is also aware of his own limitations and is not too proud to retreat when necessary.
His motivations are rooted in becoming a pro hero who can master his powerful but double-edged Quirk. He strives for self-improvement, earnestly taking advice from his teachers and mentor to overcome his weaknesses, particularly his vulnerability in close-quarters combat and his reliance on his Quirk. He thinks little of fame and idolatry, instead being driven by a sense of duty and loyalty.
In the story, Tokoyami is portrayed as one of the strongest and most reliable fighters in Class 1-A. Izuku Midoriya once remarked that Tokoyami is one of the most formidable opponents in a one-on-one battle. His skills are recognized by pro heroes, leading to him being scouted by the then-Number 3 hero, Hawks, for a work study. This mentorship is a key part of his role, as he learns to refine his abilities and develops a deep respect for Hawks. Tokoyami also participates in nearly every major conflict, from the U.S.J. Incident to the final war against the villains.
His key relationships include his mentor, Hawks, for whom he develops a strong sense of loyalty, risking his own life to save him. He is particularly close to his classmates Mezo Shoji and Tsuyu Asui. He works well with Tsuyu, whose calm and cool-headed judgment complements his own abilities. He also has a friendly rapport with most of his other classmates, including Izuku Midoriya and Denki Kaminari.
Tokoyami undergoes significant development throughout the series. Early on, he struggles to control his Quirk in dark environments, where it becomes wildly powerful and destructive, attacking friend and foe alike. Through training and experience, he learns to better manage Dark Shadow, even in its most potent state. Under Hawks' tutelage, he develops new techniques to overcome his physical frailty and increase his mobility, such as the Black Ankh and Black Fallen Angel. By the final arc, he has gained enough control to temporarily unleash Dark Shadow's full, terrifying power against major villains like All For One without losing himself.
Tokoyami's most notable ability is his Quirk, Dark Shadow. This power allows him to manifest a sentient shadow monster from his own body. Dark Shadow has a mind of its own and can speak, acting as a partner to Tokoyami. Its power, size, and personality are directly tied to the amount of light in the environment. In bright light, Dark Shadow is weakened, small, and timid. In total darkness, it becomes a colossal, incredibly strong, and ferocious beast. However, this immense power is harder to control and can cause Dark Shadow to go into a berserk rampage, especially if Tokoyami is experiencing strong negative emotions. Conversely, a powerful light source can instantly subdue it.
Tokoyami is highly skilled at using Dark Shadow for offense, defense, and mobility. He can command it to strike from a distance, create shields, and even carry him through the air. To offset his vulnerability when an enemy gets past Dark Shadow, he developed a super move called Black Ankh, where he wraps Dark Shadow around his own body like a suit of armor to enhance his physical capabilities in close combat. Another technique, Black Fallen Angel, involves Dark Shadow carrying him to grant him flight. In situations of extreme darkness, he can unleash techniques like Ragnarok, where Dark Shadow grows to an enormous size to devastate a wide area. His ultimate attack, Total Release, channels the full, accumulated power of Dark Shadow into a single, overwhelming blow powerful enough to gravely threaten even the series' strongest villains.
