Description
Ilumgand Hopleys is a character from the anime Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy-. He is the second son of the noble Hopleys family in the Kingdom of Limia, making him the younger brother of Oswald Hopleys. As a member of a high-ranking aristocratic house connected to the royal family, he was raised with a strong sense of his own social status and the responsibilities that accompany it. He becomes a student at the Central Academy in the academic city of Rotsgard, initially seen as a promising young man driven by a desire for reform.

In his early years, Ilumgand held sincere ideals, wanting to help commoners and fight against the corruption he saw within the aristocracy. During a visit to the land of Aensland, he formed a strong childhood friendship with a girl named Luria, with whom he shared a dream of someday reforming society. Later, upon encountering the summoned hero Hibiki Otonashi, he became a devoted admirer and a firm follower, inspired by her vision of justice. He dedicated himself to his studies at the academy with the goal of becoming a valuable asset and ally to the hero after his graduation.

However, Ilumgand's personality is marked by extreme pride, vanity, and a deep-seated insecurity that he often masks with arrogance. He has a haughty and condescending attitude towards those he considers beneath him and shows a clear tendency to discriminate against others, including a fellow bearer of the Hopleys name, Abelia, who comes from a humbler background. This behavior leads the powerful being Tomoe to assess him as the very image of a decadent and ugly noble. While his brother Oswald genuinely loves him and the hero Hibiki considers him a rare noble who properly considers commoners, his fragile self-esteem cannot handle rejection or humiliation.

During his time in Rotsgard, Ilumgand is reunited with Luria, his childhood friend. He attempts to rekindle their bond, but his approach is aggressive and obsessive, ultimately driving her away as she is hurt and traumatized by past events. When the protagonist Makoto Misumi and his companion Shiki intervene to stop Ilumgand's aggressive behavior, Ilumgand is publicly humiliated. He then learns that Luria has become friends with Makoto and is even a lecturer at the academy. This series of events shatters his pride and transforms his admiration for his ideals into intense jealousy and resentment towards Luria, Makoto, and Shiki.

Desperate and anxious about his own lack of ability, Ilumgand is manipulated by the demon Rona, who is disguised as a human. He begins taking a powerful and dangerous drug that Rona provides to artificially enhance his powers. The substance gradually erodes his self-control and amplifies his negative emotions. His animosity towards Makoto and the Kuzunoha company intensifies to an irrational degree as he seeks to have them expelled from the academy. He uses the influence of the Hopleys family to pressure guilds and harass Makoto's business through merchant associations, leaving behind any pretense of his former pure aspirations.

In terms of notable abilities, Ilumgand is considered one of the most outstanding students at the Rotsgard Academy, skilled as both a warrior and a mage capable of using Wind magic. However, his abilities are ultimately amateurish compared to the students trained by Makoto. His significant power comes from the demonic drug he abuses, which while granting him a temporary boost in strength, leads to increasingly erratic behavior and severe physical consequences.

His obsession culminates during a school festival tournament, where he resorts to underhanded tactics to try and eliminate his rivals. Following a humiliating defeat, the side effects of the drug take full effect, causing him to lose control and mutate into a monstrous, shapeless mass of flesh. In this feral state, he rampages and attacks indiscriminately, even killing his own followers. He is ultimately defeated and subdued by a group of students. In his final moments, he briefly regains his sanity, but he is then disposed of by Mio, another of Makoto's companions, before the wider public can learn the full truth. After his death, the Kingdom of Limia brands him a traitor who conspired with demons, a revelation that shocks his brother Oswald and permanently tarnishes the honor of the Hopleys family name.
