Description
Genzaburou Inoue serves as the Captain of the Sixth Division within the Shinsengumi. He is a kind and fatherly middle-aged man who first appears to the protagonist Chizuru Yukimura when she awakens in the Shinsengumi headquarters. His demeanor immediately sets him apart from many of his fellow officers, as he lacks the intimidating air that surrounds others and treats Chizuru with gentle concern from the start. He is opposed to any idea of harming Chizuru, primarily due to her youth, and once he learns her true circumstances, he expresses remorse for having left her bound and becomes deeply concerned for her well-being.

Despite his generally good-natured and unassertive personality, Inoue possesses a ferocious temper that surfaces when he reaches his limits. This hidden side is well-known among his comrades, with other captains like Harada and Nagakura reportedly running for their lives when he finally snaps. He takes his duties seriously and expects the same level of commitment from his colleagues. Inoue maintains a close and trusting bond with the Shinsengumi leadership, hailing from the same village as Toshizo Hijikata and Isami Kondo and training alongside them at the Shieikan dojo. Through a family marriage connection, he is also distantly linked to Souji Okita.

In the narrative, Inoue often accompanies main Shinsengumi members on their missions, serves as a reliable intelligence officer, and spends much time on essential chores and maintaining order at the compound. He provides consistent emotional support to Chizuru during her search for her father. On one occasion, when a cat causes a mess in the kitchen, he loses his temper to such an extent that other captains flee, though he later helps clean up. When a clothesline collapses, he works alongside Chizuru to rewash the linens, revealing he is accustomed to such large-scale chores from his days at the Shieikan. He reassures Chizuru that all the former students there are good people and that the Shinsengumi will not mistreat her.

Inoue is a competent fighter who was a dedicated student of the Tennen Rishin-ryu style, taking around ten years to achieve the highest level of proficiency, or menkyo kaiden. His role is primarily supportive, but his loyalty to the Shinsengumi's ideals and leadership is unwavering. In nearly every story route, his narrative concludes tragically during the Battle of Toba-Fushimi. The specific circumstances may vary, but he consistently dies while protecting Chizuru. In a recurring scene, he accompanies Chizuru to seek reinforcements from the Yodo clan, only to discover their betrayal. He then prioritizes Chizuru's safety above all else, urging her to flee while he single-handedly faces the attacking enemies. He is typically shot and cut down, and his death has a profound impact on Chizuru, causing her to draw her sword in combat for the first time. In his final moments, he expresses his fatherly feelings for her, stating that if he had a daughter, she would be around Chizuru's age, and that a father must protect his daughter.
