TV-Series
Description
Balam Shinichiro is a faculty member at Babyls Demon School, where he serves as the teacher of Imaginary Biology and the head of the Imaginary Things Research Division. He is a tall and muscular demon, standing at 193 centimeters tall, with bird-like legs and sharp talons for feet. His most distinctive feature is the metal mask he wears over his mouth and nose, which conceals a scar that exposes the left side of his jaw and his sharp fangs. This injury occurred during his childhood when he was abducted by a large bird monster. At the time of his introduction, he has very long hair that reaches his feet, though he later cuts it short, and it is known to grow back quickly during a seasonal "molting" period.
Despite his fearsome and intimidating appearance, Balam possesses an exceptionally gentle and kind personality. He holds a deep love for all living things, treating every creature with compassion and curiosity. This passion extends to his academic specialty, as he is fascinated by mythical beings, including humans, which are considered legendary creatures in the demon world. However, his enthusiasm often manifests as an uncontrollable urge to pet and touch his students and other living beings, a habit that unfortunately frightens them and contributes to his scary reputation. He is aware of how others perceive him and harbors some insecurity about his appearance, which is why he initially keeps his face covered. His teaching methods are unorthodox yet effective; he creates picture books to help students understand complex subjects, though students often avoid them due to baseless rumors that they are experiment notes.
As a teacher, Balam is dedicated and protective of his students, especially after learning that Suzuki Iruma is a human. Upon discovering Iruma's secret by chance and verifying it with his bloodline magic, he becomes one of the first demons outside Iruma's friends to know the truth. Rather than posing a threat, he immediately assumes the role of a mentor and guardian, giving Iruma a lengthy lecture on how to survive in the demon world and helping him prepare for his exams using the custom-made picture books. His motivation is driven by a genuine concern for Iruma's well-being and an academic fascination with observing a real human.
Balam holds the rank of Khet, which is level 8, making him one of the highest-ranked teachers at the school alongside his friend Naberius Kalego. His bloodline magic is called Buzzer, also known as the Chimes of Deception, which allows him to instantly detect lies or wrongful actions in anyone he observes. He famously deploys this ability across the entire school during exams to prevent cheating. In combat, he is a formidable fighter with proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and possesses immense physical strength that he sometimes struggles to control during mundane tasks like making tea. He can summon and manipulate magical vines for mobility and capture, and he knows a defensive spell called Grand Cocoon, which creates a protective barrier strong enough to withstand powerful attacks. He was also the victor of his year's Harvest Festival, using his extensive knowledge of magical beasts to accumulate a massive score without directly fighting other students.
Balam shares a close, long-standing friendship with Kalego, having been classmates with him since their own days as students at Babyls. Unlike most others, Kalego was never deterred by Balam's appearance, and the two have remained close allies. They share the same rank and often collaborate on school matters, serving as the teaching staff's strongest line of defense against threats. He also has a respectful relationship with Opera, who was his senior during his school years. As the story progresses, Balam becomes a key mentor to Iruma's classmates, Asmodeus Alice and Sabnock Sabro, providing them with rigorous training for the Harvest Festival. He develops a more confident and open demeanor after meeting Iruma, even cutting his long hair to appear less frightening to others, though his students find his new look "differently scary". He remains a vigilant and protective figure, often warning Iruma of potential dangers and investigating suspicious individuals who arrive at the school.
