Description
Ali is the name given to the mysterious spirit who resides within the Gluttonous Ring, a golden magical artifact given to the protagonist Iruma Suzuki. In his default form, Ali appears as a tiny gentleman, standing approximately twenty centimeters tall, dressed in a tuxedo, and possessing a single, large eye. This form is actually created by Iruma using transformation magic, and Ali has been known to change his attire, sometimes wearing women's clothing, wigs, or dresses, which makes his gender presentation ambiguous.
At the beginning of his existence, Ali had no self-awareness, existing as little more than a mindless shadowy creature within the ring. His consciousness awakened in stages directly tied to Iruma's rising rank at Babyls Demon School. When Iruma achieved the rank of Bet, the second rank, Ali gained his own will and sense of self, retaining memories of events from that time. It was only upon Iruma reaching the third rank, Gimmel, that Ali gained the ability to speak and communicate fully, beginning his active role as a mentor and partner.
Ali possesses a playful, mischievous, and somewhat eccentric personality. He has a unique way of referring to himself, using the pronoun ore-tchin, and often teases Iruma, doing as he pleases. He initially started calling Iruma Master but switched to the more familiar nickname Irubou, which Iruma did not particularly like. In return, Iruma refers to him as Ari-san. Despite his teasing nature, Ali is fiercely loyal and protective of Iruma, consistently being the first to jump in and help when his partner is in genuine danger. He takes his role as a magical teacher seriously, providing Iruma with rigorous instruction in the ways of demon magic.
Ali's primary role in the story is that of a mentor, partner, and living magical artifact for Iruma. The Gluttonous Ring, and by extension Ali, serves as a crucial tool that allows the human Iruma to use magic in the demon world, storing magical power from others and releasing it when needed. Ali is deeply knowledgeable about magic and guides Iruma through numerous difficult situations, teaching him new spells and helping him strategize. A significant demonstration of his power was when he cast a personality-altering spell on Iruma, transforming him into the assertive and charismatic Evil Iruma, an event that caused considerable upheaval and growth among the students. Notably, Ali is generally invisible and inaudible to other demons, so when Iruma speaks to him, it appears as though he is talking to himself, a fact that has shocked characters like Sullivan and Ameri Azazel when they learned the truth.
The relationship between Ali and Iruma is the most central one for the character. He acts as Iruma's assistant, confidant, and friend, with their dynamic being both teasing and sincere. Ali is wary of others discovering his existence and prefers to keep his presence a secret from anyone other than Iruma, often staying in the background when other powerful demons are near.
Ali's development is directly tied to Iruma's progression. After a period of silence and dormancy that began when Iruma reached the fourth rank, Daleth, Ali awakened again when Iruma attained the fifth rank, He. With this new level of power, he gained new abilities, such as the capacity to change his size and move away from the ring for short distances, though going too far would quickly pull him back. This awakening also granted him the ability to adjust the ring's power output in three modes: Little Devil, Demon, and Ifrit, whereas previously it could only release all of its stored magic at once.
In terms of notable abilities, Ali's most fundamental power is his existence as the Gluttonous Ring. He can store vast amounts of magical energy and release it for Iruma to use. If the ring's magic is depleted, Ali transforms into a shadow monster that can forcibly absorb magic from anyone in the vicinity. In an emergency, the spell Pandora or Pandorula can be used to release all stored magic in a single, powerful burst. He can also shapeshift, not only into his standard tuxedo form but also by changing his size and appearance. Throughout the story, there are persistent hints and fan theories that suggest Ali may be connected to or even be the spirit of the former Demon King, Derkila, as his name Alikred is Derkila spelled backwards.
