Description
In the anime and manga series Moriarty the Patriot, the character known as James Bond is formally named James Bonde. This spelling, used consistently in the anime adaptation and official supplementary materials, distinguishes him from the famous spy, though his name is a direct homage to Ian Flemings creation. James Bonde was originally born as Irene Adler in New Jersey in 1858. Before his transformation, he was a celebrated prima donna, or leading female opera singer, known as the Woman for his talent and charm. After a promising younger singer was driven to suicide due to her lack of noble connections, Bonde became disillusioned with a society that valued status over merit. He began using his beauty and position to seduce and blackmail wealthy aristocrats, not for personal gain, but to force them to provide opportunities and financial support for other underprivileged but talented artists.
His blackmailing activities eventually led him to steal a highly sensitive document from Buckingham Palace, which put his life in danger from the British government. In a desperate and clever move, he sought the protection of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, manipulating the situation so that Holmes felt responsible for him. To escape his past permanently, he faked the death of Irene Adler. With the help of William and Albert James Moriarty, he adopted a new identity and began living as a man named James Bonde, becoming an associate of the Moriarty organization and the seventh agent of their covert MI6 network.
James Bonde is a highly intelligent, confident, and resourceful individual. He possesses a strong moral compass rooted in his past experiences; he despises oppression and is willing to sacrifice his own safety to avoid putting others at risk. He is known for being gentle and quick to defend those being mistreated, yet he is also assertive in fighting for his own rights and demanding to be treated as the man he is. This is most clearly demonstrated after his transition when he calmly but firmly corrects an associate who insists he is a woman, a stance that the Moriarty brothers fully support. He also has a flirtatious and playful side, showing romantic interest in people regardless of gender, including Sherlock Holmes and Miss Moneypenny.
In the story, Bonde serves as a capable and loyal operative for William Moriarty. He participates in missions alongside other key members like the sharpshooter Sebastian Moran, with whom he initially clashes but eventually earns respect. His relationship with William is one of deep gratitude, as William gave him the chance to live authentically. His dynamic with Sherlock Holmes is notably complex; the detective knew him as Irene Adler, and after his transformation, they share a layered connection marked by mutual intelligence and a playful tension. Throughout the series, Bonde develops from a person forced to live a double life as a courtesan and blackmailer for survival, into an open and confident agent who has found a new family and purpose. He learns to trust his own instincts and fight for a better world on his own terms, no longer confined by traditional expectations.
James Bonde is a skilled performer and master of disguise, able to deceive even the sharp-eyed Sherlock Holmes. He is also a surprisingly capable combatant, able to hold his own in physical altercations and think quickly in high-stress situations, such as using a coin to deflect a bullet and jam a gatling gun. His intelligence and strategic thinking make him a valuable asset for infiltration and information gathering.
