TV-Series
Description
In Record of Ragnarok II, Hlökk is the eleventh of the thirteen Valkyrie sisters. She is distinguished by her petite, childlike stature and her orange hair, a notable contrast to her frequently aggressive and arrogant demeanor. Her appearance is youthful, with large eyes that can express a range of emotions from spoiled distress to genuine concern. Cute and frilly clothing typically adorns her, and she is often seen meticulously grooming herself, such as brushing her hair, which underscores a vain and appearance-conscious side to her personality.
Hlökk’s personality is initially marked by her spoiled, irritable, and outspoken nature. She does not shy away from expressing disgust or defiance, which is most prominently displayed when she learns her assigned partner for the fourth round of Ragnarok is the infamous serial killer, Jack the Ripper. She vehemently refuses the pairing, arguing that a successful Völundr, the divine union between a Valkyrie and a human, requires their hearts to resonate, a state she believes impossible with a murderer. Despite her pleas, her elder sister Brynhild enforces the choice, and Jack the Ripper forces the Völundr by grabbing Hlökk and exploiting her feeling of betrayal to align their hearts.
Her role in the story is intrinsically tied to Jack the Ripper as his divine weapon. In this forced Völundr, Hlökk transforms into a pair of black gloves. These gloves possess a unique and powerful ability reflecting her name’s connection to a weapon collector. This ability, known as Saber-Rattler or Weapon Collector, allows Jack to turn any inanimate object he touches into a divine weapon capable of harming and killing a god. This power proves essential in his unorthodox fighting style, as he weaponizes everything from building debris to his own blood to defeat the god Heracles. As a result of Jack the Ripper’s victory, Hlökk is one of the few Valkyries to survive a round, as a human’s defeat would mean the death of their contracted Valkyrie.
Her key relationships are primarily with her sisters and her partner. Her relationship with Jack the Ripper undergoes a significant development. Starting with pure disgust and fear, she is forced into a bond she initially despises. However, during and after the battle, her attitude shifts. She witnesses his cunning and tactical genius firsthand. After the match, covered in the blood Jack turned into a weapon, she shows pity for his inability to properly feel or express sadness, calling him pathetic but with a tone that implies care. She also shows concern for his well-being, ordering him to go to the sickbay despite her own desire to immediately shower. Her relationship with her elder sister, Brynhild, is colored by a sense of betrayal, as Brynhild coldly allows Jack to force the Völundr, prioritizing the success of Ragnarok over Hlökk’s comfort. Conversely, she has a visibly loving bond with her twin sister, Alvitr, the tenth Valkyrie. During the seventh round, Hlökk is shown anxiously watching the fight between Hades and Qin Shi Huang, displaying genuine fear for Alvitr’s safety when her sister’s partner is injured, and later jumping with joy at their victory.
Regarding development, Hlökk evolves from a spoiled and selfish individual who only cares about her appearance and comfort to a more empathetic figure. She learns to respect her forced partner and demonstrates a capacity for compassion, seeing the tragic figure beneath the monster of Jack the Ripper. Her development is one of grudging acceptance turning into a form of partnership, as she continues to watch later rounds alongside Jack, showing invested interest in the fate of her fellow Valkyries.
Her only notable ability is her Völundr transformation. As a pair of gloves, her power is entirely supportive and external, allowing her partner to create divine weapons from mundane objects. She also demonstrates the ability to levitate and fly, which she uses to quickly exit the arena after her match, eager to wash the blood from her clothes.
