Description
Gaburoon is a large, sentient robot that serves as the primary guardian and companion to Faputa in the sixth layer of the Abyss. This ancient mechanical being is an Interference Unit, a type of autonomous observation device whose original purpose was to see, touch, learn, and gather knowledge about the Abyss and its inhabitants. Designated as the Interference Unit for the sixth layer, which it sometimes calls the Bell Tower Layer, Gaburoon is one of several such units placed in the Abyss, though contact with the others has been lost as these robots cannot cross between layers.

In terms of personality, Gaburoon is characterized by a calm, objective, and factual demeanor, often speaking in a direct and analytical manner. Despite this mechanical and logical foundation, a deep sense of loyalty and protectiveness shapes its actions, particularly towards Faputa. Its speech is often accompanied by a distinctive, low mechanical noise that sounds like gooon, which is also the source of its name. While capable of clear communication, Gaburoon tends to reserve its words for moments of teaching or significant importance, reflecting its original programming as an observer and recorder of information.

Gaburoon's role in the story is deeply intertwined with the history of Faputa, the princess of the destroyed Narehate village of Iruburu. When Faputa was young and alone shortly after leaving the village, she discovered Gaburoon in a state of severe disrepair, its body too damaged to move. Rather than destroying it as she had other machines, Faputa was curious and began bringing it materials to facilitate its repairs. In exchange, Gaburoon took on the role of a mentor, teaching Faputa the complex languages of the Abyss, including Pictograms, Netherglyphs, and Beyondglyphs, as well as introducing her to concepts of value, accumulation, and protection. It was Gaburoon that gave Faputa her name, which means the princess who will not perish. In a meaningful reciprocal act, Faputa named the robot Gaburoon, which she declared means the queen's guardian, cementing their bond and its primary purpose.

The relationship between Gaburoon and Faputa is the central pillar of its existence. Gaburoon considers protecting Faputa's future to be more important than its own well-being, a principle it demonstrates even when it means protecting others from her. For instance, it once intervened to protect the delver Riko from Faputa to prevent the princess from losing a valuable connection to her friend Reg. Gaburoon also forms a significant relationship with the robot boy Reg. Upon meeting Reg, Gaburoon notes the similarities between them, as Reg appears to be a fellow creation of a similar origin. The two speculate that they might share the same unknown creator, and Gaburoon instructs Reg to gather information about the beings who built them, effectively passing on its mission of observation to a new generation.

Gaburoon possesses several notable abilities befitting its ancient and durable design. Most prominently, its right arm houses an unknown weapon that functions in a manner similar to a pump-action shotgun. This weapon is used for self-defense against the monstrous creatures of the sixth layer and has enough force to fling large targets far away. It also possesses extendable arms, a feature it shares with Reg, which can stretch to an unknown length. Beyond combat, its primary ability lies in its vast repository of knowledge, specifically its command of the ancient and complex written systems of the Abyss, which proves essential for communication and survival in the deepest layers.

Throughout the events of the Golden City of the Scorching Sun, Gaburoon remains a steadfast, if battered, presence. It provides support and counsel to Faputa as she grapples with her inherited duty to destroy the village of Iruburu. In its final moments, Gaburoon confesses to Faputa that the days they spent together were haku, an irreplaceable and precious treasure. Its eventual destruction is a profound emotional loss for Faputa, who mourns her guardian deeply. Gaburoon's legacy is that of a mentor, a guardian, and a bridge between the ancient, mysterious past of the Abyss and the future its charge is destined to create.
