Description
Hitori Gotoh is the main protagonist of her story, a high school girl whose life is defined by extreme social anxiety and a deep, almost desperate, longing for connection. A first-year student at Shuka High School, she lives in the Kanazawa Hakkei area of Yokohama City but commutes two hours each way to attend a school in Shimokitazawa, specifically to be in a place where nobody knows her. Her appearance is characterized by long pink hair, which she keeps long simply because she is too scared to go to a hair salon, and distinctive blue and yellow cube-shaped hair clips worn on the right side. Her daily attire almost always consists of a pink tracksuit, a style she adopted after an embarrassing incident during a band photoshoot, worn with a grey pleated skirt and brown loafers. Despite her unkempt appearance and habit of hiding her face or her entire body, her bandmates have described her as a beautiful girl, with one noting she is a diamond in the rough who could be marketed for her looks. She is surprisingly well-endowed, a fact that sometimes earns her looks of jealousy from others, though she remains completely oblivious to her own physical charms.

Hitori's personality is defined by crippling introversion and social anxiety, which makes it nearly impossible for her to initiate conversations, make eye contact with new people, or function in normal social situations. She often shies away from first encounters, and when overwhelmed, she has a habit of hiding in small, dark spaces such as trash cans, cardboard boxes, or the closet in her room where she practices guitar. Her mental state can be so extreme that she is often depicted physically deforming, melting, or collapsing into a pile of dust, with her bandmates having to figuratively "repair" her. At home, however, she is notably more relaxed and comfortable with her family, who are all sociable and handle her eccentricities with ease. She has a deep-seated complex about her lonely youth, having spent all of middle school without making a single friend, which causes her to despise school events and daydream about dropping out after becoming a rock star. As a reaction to her isolation, she has an intense desire for approval and validation. She is easily carried away when praised but also has a wild imagination that swings between extreme optimism and crippling pessimism. Despite her awkwardness, she is surprisingly observant and often the first to notice when her bandmates are troubled.

Hitori’s primary motivation is to overcome her fears and be accepted by society. This dream was sparked during her first year of middle school when she saw an interview with a member of a popular band who described himself as an introvert. Believing that even a gloomy person like her could shine in a band, she borrowed her father's guitar and began practicing obsessively. Her goal is to perform in a band that can showcase her talent, and through that, finally make friends and become popular. She craves the admiration of others, believing that musical success is her lifeline to a cool, popular persona.

In the story, Hitori is the lead guitarist and primary lyricist for the Kessoku Band. She was scouted by the band's drummer, Nijika Ijichi, who found her sitting alone in a park with her guitar. Her role in the band is crucial; while from an outside perspective she appears to be riding on the band's coattails, her talent and dedication are what truly glue the group together. The band's name, Kessoku Band, was chosen by the bassist Ryo Yamada, who also gave Hitori the nickname Bocchi-chan, derived from the word hitoribocchi meaning "all alone". Hitori likes this nickname as it is the first one she has ever had. Ikuyo Kita, the band's vocalist and second guitarist, forms a master-student relationship with Hitori, as Hitori teaches her how to play the guitar and is often flustered by Kita’s cheerful and extroverted personality.

Hitori's development throughout the story is significant, though her core personality remains anxious and quirky. She is forced out of her comfort zone in nearly every episode, from taking on a part-time job at the live house STARRY to selling tickets and, most importantly, performing on stage. She grows from being unable to play in front of an audience to delivering breathtaking solos that captivate a room, such as during a concert threatened by a typhoon. She begins to shift her perspective from playing music solely for her own validation to wanting to succeed together with her new friends. Every new obstacle she faces, from writing lyrics to interacting with fans, pushes her to take small but meaningful steps forward in her personal growth.

Despite her social failings, Hitori possesses an extraordinary and notable ability: she is a self-taught guitar prodigy. Having practiced for over six hours every day for three years, her individual playing skill is considered professional level. She is proficient in advanced techniques such as playing with her teeth, playing behind her back, and using a bottle as a slide. She also maintains a popular online video channel under the handle name guitarhero, where she posts covers of famous songs filmed from an angle that hides her face. The channel has amassed a large following, but Hitori has not publicly revealed her identity, believing she is not yet skilled enough to live up to the name in a live setting and wanting her band to succeed on their own merit. As a lyricist, her writing is initially dark and introspective because she avoids cringey, youthful themes due to her personal complexes, a style that was first praised by Ryo and later lauded by a music critic for having uncommon depth.
