Description
Eizen Yamada Asaemon is a character from the manga and anime series Hell's Paradise. He is a prominent member of the Yamada clan, a family of ronin who serve the shogunate as sword testers and executioners, and holds the distinguished rank of first within the clan's hierarchy.

Standing 180 centimeters tall, Eizen is a man in his late twenties with a notable physical characteristic: he is missing his left eye, which he lost to an illness during infancy and covers with a large eyepatch. His long, spiky red hair and mature, authoritative bearing mark him as an individual of experience and standing.

Eizen’s personality is defined by a deep-seated pride in the Yamada clan and a firm belief in its members' ability to execute any condemned criminal without fail. As a professional executioner, he adheres strictly to the clan's ideal of performing an execution with a single, painless cut that carries no emotion, a philosophy he considers to be of utmost importance to avoid defiling the magistrate. He is shown to be kind and caring, particularly toward the younger members of the clan, having promised to look after a young Shugen and acting as a mentor to him, an influence that would profoundly shape Shugen's life. However, his traditionalist views also extend to the role of women in the clan; like several of his fellows, he disapproves of women becoming samurai or executioners, leading to an antagonistic and conflicting relationship with Sagiri, whom he bluntly tells that her place is to live a comfortable life within the household.

Eizen is a key figure in the early stages of the story, selected as one of the Asaemon monitors for the expedition to the mysterious island of Kotaku. He is assigned to keep watch over the death row convict Rokurōta, a giant of a man believed to be impervious to weapons. His primary motivation is to serve the clan and fulfill his duty, viewing the dangerous mission as another task well-suited for the Asaemon. He is also noted to be the most likely candidate to succeed the current head of the Yamada clan, chosen for his leadership qualities, wisdom, and deep knowledge of the clan's traditions rather than for his raw combat prowess.

Despite being the highest-ranked Asaemon, Eizen is not considered the clan's strongest fighter, a title held by his protégé, Shugen. His combat skills are noted to be poor, and his ranking is based on his suitability to become the next head of the family. In a moment that underscores this disparity between rank and strength, soon after arriving on the island, a hungry and startled Rokurōta crushes Eizen to death, destroying his sword in the process. This sudden and brutal death has a profound impact on the story. Shugen, who had been awaiting Eizen's return, is devastated upon finding his mentor's corpse and takes the time to lay his soul to rest even while under attack. Swearing to avenge his fallen master, Eizen's death becomes a central motivation for Shugen's actions throughout the remainder of the mission. His legacy is that of a foundational influence and a lost pillar of the Yamada clan, whose teachings and memory continue to guide and drive the younger generation.
