Description
Laura Apollodoros Hyginus La Mer, known simply as Laura, is a mermaid from the undersea kingdom of Grand Ocean and the prospective next queen of that realm. She is thirteen years old, with a birthday on June 30. Tasked by the Mermaid Queen to find the legendary warriors called the Pretty Cure, Laura travels to the human world in Aozora City. Her initial motivation is largely personal: she believes that fulfilling this mission will secure her position as queen. Laura is highly self‑confident and outspoken, never hesitating to say exactly what is on her mind. This bluntness can come across as prideful, but she is also capable of deep loyalty and growing empathy.
At first, Laura cannot survive on land without magical aid. She resides inside a device called the Mermaid Aqua Pot, which she uses to move around and to restore Motivation Power stolen by villains. Her inability to walk among humans makes her feel isolated, and she secretly longs for legs and a normal human life. This desire intensifies after she meets Manatsu Natsuumi (Cure Summer) and the other girls who become Pretty Cure. Her wish is exploited by the Witch of Delays, who kidnaps Laura and tries to persuade her to betray her friends in exchange for human form. Laura refuses, escapes by biting the Witch, and is rescued by the mermaid companion Kururun.
The Mermaid Queen then gives Laura a choice: return to Grand Ocean or stay with her friends. Laura chooses to stay, and the Queen bestows upon her the Mermaid Aqua Pact, an item that allows her to transform into a human at will and to become a Pretty Cure herself. In her first battle as Cure La Mer, Laura defends her friends against the enemy general Chongire, unlocking her Heart Kuru Ring and performing her signature purification attack. After the fight, she discovers she has permanently gained human legs. Overjoyed, she moves in with Manatsu and her mother, enrolls at Aozora Middle School, and joins the Tropical Club alongside the other Cures.
As Cure La Mer, Laura fights alongside Cure Summer, Cure Coral, Cure Papaya, and Cure Flamingo. Her primary ability is control over water. Using the Mermaid Aqua Pact, she can create powerful whirlpools with her attack Kurukuru La Mer Stream and trap enemies inside bubbles with Ocean Bubble Shower. As a natural mermaid, she is an excellent swimmer and can breathe underwater, though these abilities are lost when she is in her human form. She also has a beautiful singing voice and enjoys music.
Laura’s relationships are central to her growth. She respects the Mermaid Queen as a maternal figure and gradually learns that true leadership comes from selflessness, not ambition. Her closest bond is with Manatsu, whose unwavering kindness and enthusiasm help Laura open up. She also forms strong friendships with the other Cures, each of whom she initially regarded with skepticism but later comes to trust completely. Through her experiences, Laura transforms from a haughty, self‑interested mermaid into a devoted protector of both the human and mermaid worlds, embodying the qualities needed to become Grand Ocean’s future queen.
