Description
Karla Mitchum is a scientist who serves the Principality of Zeon during the One Year War, specializing in prosthetics and biological interfaces. Her expertise lies in developing advanced prosthetic limbs and refining the Reuse P Device system, a technology designed to enhance the synchronization between an amputee pilot and their mobile suit.
Her motivation for serving the Zeon military is deeply personal and not born out of ideological loyalty. Karla’s father, a historian who was imprisoned as a political dissident by the Zeon regime, remains incarcerated, and she cooperates with the military in hopes of securing his release. This forced conscription creates a complex inner conflict, as she resents that her work is being used to perpetuate a war that brings only death and suffering.
Within the Living Dead Division, a unit composed of wounded soldiers, Karla is known for her caring and compassionate nature toward the pilots. She develops romantic relationships with two of them. The first is Ensign Hoover, the initial commander of the mobile suit team, whose death at the hands of the Earth Federation pilot Io Fleming devastates her. In her grief, she asks ace pilot Daryl Lorenz to avenge Hoover. Her bond with Daryl deepens over time. As his conflict with Io intensifies, he loses more of his organic limbs to better interface with the experimental Psycho Zaku—a procedure Karla is forced to perform. Their shared trauma and dependence evolve into a romantic connection, culminating in a kiss before his final sortie, during which Daryl declares Karla to be his reason for living.
The horrors of the war in the Thunderbolt Sector ultimately shatter Karla’s psyche. During a Federation assault on the Zeon flagship Dried Fish, she and the research team prepare to scuttle the ship. As a colleague hesitates, Federation soldiers locate the team; when Karla tries to intervene, the entire team is instantly vaporized by a beam saber. Witnessing this atrocity sends her into a catatonic state.
Karla remains unconscious until after the war ends. When she awakens, the profound psychological trauma manifests as a severe mental regression, leaving her mind in an adolescent state. She no longer recognizes Daryl as her former lover, instead calling him her papa. Despite this, Daryl continues to care for her, and she remains under the supervision of a Zeon medical team. Her later experiences lead to a deep-seated bitterness, as she comes to feel that both Zeon and the South Seas Alliance have exploited her solely as a tool, a resentment that drives her to increasingly extreme actions.
