Description
Nines commands the GAF, the military force imposing control inside Datania's domed city under the rule of Zero, the AI managing the city. As Zero's principal human enforcer, he spearheads operations suppressing dissent and hunting escapees, focusing intensely on the rebel Returners and individuals carrying the unique biological substance DT.

He holds significant authority within Datania's rigid hierarchy, tasked with maintaining order among emotion-suppressed child laborers governed by a reset system. Initially depicted as utterly loyal to Zero's commands, Nines exhibits ruthless efficiency in his duties, including pursuing fugitive children like Shu and Fia.

A critical element involves Fia, a fourteen-year-old escapee who becomes his informant within Shu's group, feeding him intelligence on the Returners. Nines ultimately betrays Fia, callously discarding her once her usefulness as a spy ends, severing her Datania ties and pushing her fully into the Returners' ranks.

He contends with internal conflict and professional rivalry, notably from his ambitious subordinate Berk. Berk persistently challenges Nines's authority and decisions, striving to undermine him and seize leadership of the GAF, exposing tensions within Datania's command despite their shared mission to capture DT bearers.

Nines's motivations evolve beyond mere obedience. He develops an intense, specific obsession with defeating Eightron, a powerful entity the Returners summon for protection. This obsession becomes a personal driving force, separate from Zero's primary goal of DT collection.

As the narrative advances and an inevitable global flood approaches due to failing environmental systems, Nines's role shifts. He joins the desperate bid to preserve humanity by boarding a rocket constructed in Zero's other city, Amaroute. Nines successfully launches this vessel, carrying Diana, 2,000 selected individuals, and comprehensive data archives intended to rebuild civilization on a new world.

In a pivotal final encounter amidst the chaotic flood, Nines meets Shu outside the rocket in Datania just before its attempted launch. He delivers a brief, inaudible message to Shu, who acknowledges it with a nod. The message's specific content remains unknown.

His ultimate fate sees him departing Earth aboard the rocket, carrying humanity's survival hopes, while a cataclysmic tidal wave consumes the planet.
