Description
IBM is the common name for the entity more formally known as the Invisible Black Matter, or a Black Ghost, from the manga and anime series Ajin. An IBM is a humanoid creature manifested by an Ajin, a type of immortal being. The substance that composes an IBM is completely transparent, meaning that ordinary humans cannot see it under normal circumstances. Only other Ajin, or a non-Ajin in a state of extreme emotional distress, are typically able to perceive these creatures. When visible, an IBM usually takes the form of a tall, vaguely humanoid figure, standing over two meters in height, with a body wrapped in cloth-like bandages. The appearance of each IBM is unique to its host Ajin, with variations in head shape, number of fingers, and other distinctive features.
The personality and behavior of an IBM are inherently tied to its host. Most Ajin can control their IBM completely, commanding it like a silent, obedient servant. However, the creature is not mindless and seems to possess a will of its own, often reflecting the core personality of its owner. For example, a highly disciplined and experienced Ajin like Sato has total dominion over his Black Ghost, which can operate independently with a degree of intelligence, even choosing to kill its own host to revive him and free him from the effects of tranquilizers. In contrast, the protagonist Kei Nagai has a very different relationship with his IBM. Because he was unaware of his nature as an Ajin for many years, he left his IBM without guidance or control for an extended period. As a result, his Black Ghost is wild, violent, and largely ignores its host's commands, often attacking anyone in its vicinity of its own accord. This illustrates how an IBM's personality can be shaped by neglect and can reflect the suppressed or hidden aspects of the Ajin who summons it.
An IBM's primary motivation is to carry out the will of its host, whether for combat, defense, or other strategic purposes. In the story, IBMs serve as a powerful tool that gives Ajin a significant advantage over ordinary humans, acting as a virtually invisible enforcer or bodyguard. For characters like Sato, the IBM is a key instrument in his elaborate and violent plans, capable of mimicking his voice, sharing its field of vision, and acting with tactical caution. For others, it is a protector that manifests instinctively. The central role of IBMs in the narrative is to be the supernatural manifestation of an Ajin's power, often becoming the deciding factor in conflicts between Ajin and human military forces, as well as in battles between Ajin themselves.
The connection between an Ajin and their IBM is central to their function. This relationship can be one of master and servant, as seen with the antagonist Sato, or one of chaotic neglect, as seen with Kei Nagai. The development of this bond is a key element of the story. A scientist in the series, Ikuya Ogura, theorizes that if an Ajin wants to change their IBM's violent or uncontrollable behavior, they must fundamentally change their own personality. This suggests that the IBM is not just a separate weapon, but a direct, visible projection of the Ajin's inner self. A rare and extreme phenomenon occurs when an Ajin dies under intense emotional distress, resulting in a Flood. During a Flood, the Ajin produces a massive amount of matter, manifesting not just one, but dozens of Black Ghosts that rampage uncontrollably, embodying the single powerful emotion felt at the moment of death.
Notable abilities define the IBM as a unique and powerful entity. Composed of an unstable, unknown matter, an IBM begins to dissipate shortly after being summoned, with a typical lifespan of only five to ten minutes before it collapses. However, an Ajin with an exceptionally high concentration of this matter, such as Kei Nagai, can manifest a single IBM for up to thirty minutes, or even generate multiple copies of it at once, a feat dubbed the "Flood Phenomenon". While generally resilient to physical damage, an IBM has a critical weak point: its head. A powerful blow to the head from another IBM can destroy it. Furthermore, when two IBMs collide violently, their heads can fuse, causing a temporary and uncontrolled exchange of memories between the two Ajin hosts. The substance is also affected by environmental factors; heavy rain can disrupt the connection between the Ajin and their IBM, making it difficult to control. Remarkably, IBMs have demonstrated the ability to speak, repeating phrases their host has said in the past, which adds to their eerie and unsettling nature.
