Description
Karin is the eleven-year-old protagonist of the film, a young girl who has recently experienced the death of her mother. At the start of the story, she is brought by her father, Tetsuya, to the rural Sousei-Ji temple, where her grandfather serves as a monk. Her father, who is burdened by debts to dangerous loan sharks, leaves her in the care of her grandfather after he is refused money, promising to return for her on the anniversary of her mother's death. This abrupt abandonment leaves Karin feeling isolated and uncared for in an unfamiliar environment, far from her school and friends in Tokyo.
In terms of personality, Karin is a complex and emotionally realistic child. She is initially presented as listless and bored, frequently waiting at the train station in the hope that her father will come back for her. Beneath a facade of outward obedience, she harbors a great deal of anger and grief. She acts out in ways that can be perceived as bratty or manipulative, exploiting her situation to gain sympathy from others. For instance, she fabricates a story of being completely abandoned and penniless to charm and secure help from the local yokai (spirits) she meets. However, her character is not simply that of a mean child; her short temper and mischievous behavior, including acts like stealing a bike to run away, are clear expressions of the deep loneliness and pain she feels from losing her mother and being neglected by her father.
Karin's primary motivation is a profound longing to be reunited with her late mother. This desire drives the central adventure of the film. After her father fails to meet her on their promised date, she becomes determined to travel to Tokyo to find her mother's grave and, ultimately, to see her mother again. This motivation pushes her to take risks, including convincing a local boy to steal a bike so she can run away and, later, willingly following the God of Poverty into the Land of the Dead.
Her role in the story is that of an emotional core, as her journey of grief and healing provides the narrative's central thrust. She serves as a catalyst for change, particularly in her relationship with the titular ghost cat, Anzu. While the cat is initially self-absorbed and she finds him grating, Karin comes to depend on him for his unique ability to connect with the spirit world, a connection that offers her the hope of seeing her mother again.
Key relationships define her experiences. Her relationship with her father, Tetsuya, is characterized by his irresponsibility and her resulting feelings of abandonment. At a low point, she even remarks that he could die for all she cares. Her bond with her deceased mother, Yuzuki, is the most powerful force in her life. In the underworld, her mother is portrayed as a loving and free-spirited figure who accepts the consequences of Karin's actions to protect her. The most significant relationship, however, is with Anzu. Though their partnership begins with mutual skepticism and sparks fly between their strong personalities, they develop a deep and supportive bond over the course of their perilous journey, ultimately creating their own form of family. By the film's end, she also forms a closer connection to her grandfather and the strange community at the temple.
Karin undergoes notable development throughout the narrative. She begins as a girl who feels helpless and abandoned, acting out in manipulative ways to get what she wants. Her journey forces her to confront her grief directly. By the climax, when she has the chance to return to Tokyo with her now debt-free father, she makes the mature and thoughtful decision to refuse him, choosing instead to stay at the Sousei-Ji temple with her grandfather and Anzu. This decision signifies her growth from a child desperately chasing a past life to one who can accept a new sense of home and family in an unexpected place.
Karin does not possess any supernatural or notable physical abilities. Her strengths are more subtle and social. She is shown to be quick-witted and skilled at using her perceived helplessness to influence people and yokai alike to do what she wants. Her primary ability is her emotional resilience; despite the depths of her grief and anger, she possesses the courage to venture into the terrifying Land of the Dead to find her mother and the strength to ultimately accept her loss and move forward with her life.
