Description
Dr. Nikita Tartovsky is a chief scientist leading the "Anti-Monster Strategy" department within the United Nations Monster Monitoring Organization, known as the KWLONs. He is characterized by a noble and proud demeanor, possessing a strong sense of self-esteem that defines his interactions with his colleagues. Despite this high-minded and serious nature, he is also portrayed as having an oddly endearing quality that prevents him from being disliked by those around him.
Nikita comes from a long line of scientists dedicated to the study of anti-monster strategies and weaponry, a family legacy spanning back to his great-grandfather. His grandfather and father were prominent figures in the "monster extermination faction" within the academic community, actively pursuing the goal of destroying monsters through military force. However, their work fell out of favor when a rival scientist developed a revolutionary ultrasonic monster-control device, shifting the mainstream academic consensus towards the "monster protection faction." Consequently, by the time the KWLONs was established, the budget for the anti-monster strategy department was drastically reduced, and the powerful anti-monster weapons his father and grandfather had dreamed of creating were never completed.
Motivated by a deep desire to fulfill his family's unfinished legacy, Nikita is driven to succeed where his predecessors could not. He conceptualizes and tirelessly experiments with a new type of weapon known as the SAAK, a device designed to emit a powerful energy beam capable of combating monsters. This ambition is his primary motivation within the KWLONs, placing him at odds with the organization's prevailing philosophy of coexistence. His role in the story is therefore that of a dissenting voice, a representative of the strategic, and potentially aggressive, approach to the world's monster problem, contrasting sharply with many of his peers who focus on ecology, linguistics, and peaceful analysis.
A key relationship in his life is his romantic involvement with Dr. Lulu de Picard, the head of the monster linguistics department. The two are lovers, though they choose to keep their relationship a secret. This discretion is necessary due to the disapproval of Lulu's foster father, Dr. Choji Kobayashimaru, a leading monster ecologist who harbors a past grudge against Nikita's family. Dr. Kobayashimaru had previously clashed with Nikita's father and grandfather over their extermination-focused ideology and remains wary of Nikita's own strategic weapons research. This personal connection adds a layer of internal conflict to his professional life, as he navigates the legacy of his family's rivalry with a senior colleague who is also the father figure of his partner.
While his most notable goal is the development of the SAAK weapon, his specific abilities are tied to his expertise in strategic analysis and weapons engineering. He leads the "Anti-Monster Strategy" division, indicating a profound understanding of monster combat capabilities and the theoretical application of force. His development is implied through his struggle to reconcile his inherited family mission with the contemporary, more coexistence-oriented world, and his personal navigation of his secret romance amid institutional and interpersonal tensions.
