Description
Ba Tei is a general of the Zhao military and serves as the trusted right-hand man to Ki Sui, the lord of the city of Rigan. His background is rooted in the hardships of the region, as his father, a close friend of the former Rigan lord Ki Shou, died when Ba Tei was still a child. Following this loss, Ki Shou adopted Ba Tei, raising him alongside his biological sons, Ki Sui and Ryuu Tou. This upbringing forged deep familial bonds, and Ba Tei came to see Ki Shou as his father and Ki Sui and Ryuu Tou as his brothers. He later fought alongside them in the conflict between Rigan and Anka, helping to turn the tide of that war.
In terms of personality, Ba Tei is defined above all by his extreme and unwavering loyalty. This devotion is directed toward his lord, Ki Sui, his late adoptive father, Ki Shou, and the people of Rigan. He is a courageous and aggressive leader who often leads from the front, charging directly into the thick of battle. His formidable physique, notable for its impressive height and covered in multiple scars from countless battles, reflects his hands-on and fearless approach to warfare.
Ba Tei's primary motivation is to serve Ki Sui and protect the interests of Rigan. This sense of duty drives his actions on the battlefield, where he acts as the main attacker and a key pillar of the Ki Sui Army. His role in the larger story sees him participating in major campaigns for the state of Zhao. During the Koku You Campaign, he fought alongside Ki Sui, Ryuu Tou, and the general Kei Sha to defend the region against the Qin army led by Kan Ki. The campaign took a heavy toll, and the deaths of Kei Sha and Ryuu Tou broke their fighting spirit. Later, during the Western Zhao Invasion, he and Ki Sui were placed under the command of the legendary Zhao general Ri Boku. They defended the city of Atsuyo against the Qin forces of Ou Sen during the fierce Battle of Shukai Plains.
His key relationships are almost entirely centered on his adoptive family and military hierarchy. His bond with Ki Sui is the most significant, as he is considered Ki Sui's deputy and most trusted vassal. His relationship with Ryuu Tou is that of a brother-in-arms, as they fought together from a young age. He also shares a working relationship with commanders like Ri Boku, under whose larger strategic vision he operates. On the opposing side, he has clashed with several prominent Qin warriors, including Shin, whom he managed to ambush and overwhelm during their first encounter, and the powerful female warrior Shi Ryou, with whom he fought to a standstill in a duel.
Throughout his appearances, Ba Tei shows development primarily as a resilient and enduring warrior. While his core nature as a loyal and strong commander remains constant, his experiences in major, devastating battles like Koku You and Shukai Plains test his resolve. He demonstrates an ability to learn from combat, even when outmaneuvered, as seen when he was lured into a trap by the Qin general Ma Kou. His determination remains unshaken even in defeat, as he continues to fight for his lord and his city.
Regarding notable abilities, Ba Tei is a highly talented and experienced commander whose true strength lies in his overwhelming physical power. He possesses immense strength, allowing him to kill enemy cavalry with ease and fight on par with elite warriors. His weapon of choice is a yue axe, which he wields with great skill. In duels, he has proven capable of holding his own against powerful foes like Shin and Shi Ryou. Beyond his physical prowess, he also possesses considerable tactical skill; his strategies are noted as being competent, and he is capable of successfully setting up ambushes and performing military formations such as line formations. His leadership is inspiring to his men, as he courageously leads charges that make him a key offensive asset for the Ki Sui Army.
