Description
Shintaro Umakai, a former Japanese diplomat in Russia, returned to Japan after his departure ignited a conflict with his ex-fiancée Sophia, leading her to join Grigori Rasputin’s Russian Spiritual Corps. He accepted a teaching post at Amanohara Girls' School, unaware it functioned aboard the flying battleship *Amanohara*. His assignment involved educating the Lime Unit – five teenage girls wielding supernatural Konjiki abilities to pilot spiritual mechas called Raimu.

Initially a civilian teacher, he abruptly assumed command of the Lime Unit following Lieutenant Commander Masanosuke Date’s sacrificial death protecting Sarasa Honda during an attack. This thrust him into military leadership despite his non-combat background. His duties expanded beyond teaching to encompass strategic battle coordination against Rasputin’s Russian Raimu forces. He also maintained a vital relationship with Kuki, the benevolent demon powering the *Amanohara*, sustaining her energy and the ship’s flight through intimate interactions.

He actively addressed the Lime Unit members' personal traumas: guiding Rinzu Kuroda through her father’s tragic legacy and isolation, assisting Kinu Fukushima in severing harmful spiritual bonds via a life-saving intimate encounter, and supporting Sarasa Honda’s struggles with insecurity and cultural misconceptions. Momen Sanada viewed him as a brotherly figure, while Asa Katou maintained a reserved dynamic. His guidance extended to crew members like the ship’s doctor, Sumi Ichijouji.

His past conflict with Sophia culminated in her infiltration of the *Amanohara*. Posing as an amnesiac child, she attempted to manipulate him into killing the Lime Unit. After her deception failed, she sacrificed herself to protect him from Rasputin’s final attack, expressing a dying wish for his survival. Later, during OVA events, he forged alliances with former adversaries Rasha and Sateen following Rasputin’s defeat. In the sequel *Lime-iro Ryukitan X*, the Lime Unit sacrificed their supernatural abilities to revive him after his soul was consumed, resulting in their permanent depowerment to ensure his survival.

His character arc centered on reconciling his diplomatic history with his role as a wartime commander and mentor. He navigated complex relationships, confronted personal guilt over Sophia, and adapted to the demands of leading the Lime Unit through multiple conflicts, ultimately becoming a unifying figure for the *Amanohara* crew.
