Description
Danji Momoyama, originally born Nadatsugu Minae, is a central character in the narrative. He is a 23-year-old male with a tall, muscular build, maroon hair, and light grey pupils. His chosen surname combines the kanji for peach and mountain, which he adopted after being disowned by his biological family. This disownment resulted directly from his own deliberate actions to sabotage an arranged marriage for Mirei Minae, an act he committed to prevent her exploitation.

Danji possesses a bold, passionate, and hot-blooded personality, especially when engaging in cardfights where he relishes matches against strong opponents. Despite his fiery demeanor in competition, he also shows a mature, friendly, and encouraging side. He is recognized as a dependable leader by his teammates and has a caring nature, particularly towards younger fighters. His signature catchphrase invites others to play, declaring it the beginning of a fun night. Outside of the world of cardfighting, Danji holds down a number of diverse jobs, including working as an errand center staff member, a botanist, a kindergarten teacher, a construction worker, and even a priest.

Danji’s primary motivation is rooted in his desire to protect others, a trait demonstrated by his sacrifice of his own family standing to save Mirei Minae. He is also driven by the thrill of competition and the desire to face powerful opponents. His role in the story is significant and multifaceted. Initially, he serves as the second leader of Team Blackout, following its founder Ruka Miyako, and holds an impressive record of 20 consecutive cardfight victories. However, he later departs from this role, with the team's leadership passing first to Tohya Ebata and then to Yu-yu Kondo, and joins Team Daybreak. His journey also sees him investigating the background of a major tournament called Deluxe at the behest of another powerful fighter, Michiru Hazama, during which he suspects a connection to a case involving missing fighters.

Key relationships heavily define his character. He shares a strong bond with Yu-yu Kondo, whom he mentors and encourages, helping Yu-yu step into the world of competitive fighting. He is a reliable older brother figure to Megumi Okura, who looks up to him and follows him closely. His past actions also tie him to Mirei Minae, having upended his own life to protect her from a forced marriage. Furthermore, he shares a significant rivalry and mutual respect with the powerful fighter Michiru Hazama.

Throughout the story, Danji undergoes considerable development. While he initially appears as an almost invincible leader, his narrative explores his vulnerable side, particularly as he deals with the consequences of his past and his reasons for leaving Team Blackout. His journey involves confronting his own motivations and ultimately returning to face his former teammates and other powerful rivals.

As a cardfighter, Danji is defined by his exclusive use of Dark States decks, which focus on the Final Rush mechanic. His primary avatar card is Diabolos, Violence Bruce. His deck has evolved over time; he has incorporated units like Diabolos, Viamance Bruce, a single copy of Demonic Jewel Dragon, Drajeweled for a crucial rematch, and Diabolos Rapid-carrier, Geno for enhanced offensive capabilities. His official starter deck is titled D Start Deck 02: Danji Momoyama -Tyrant Tiger-, which emphasizes the Final Rush strategy and includes key cards such as his avatar and Time-fissuring Fist Colossus.
