Description
Karim Fullham is a character from the manga and anime series Fire Force. He serves as a lieutenant and company commander within the Special Fire Force Company 1, while also holding the position of a priest in the Holy Sol Temple. At 22 years old, he stands 178.5 centimeters tall and is known for his lean build, short, brushed-forward dark grey hair, and small, often expressionless eyes that give him an appearance of being perpetually irritated or disinterested. His standard attire is distinct from the typical bunker gear of other firefighters; he wears a dark cassock with a light overcoat, a long skirt-like garment, and a cross-shaped pendant, reflecting his religious vocation.
Fullham possesses a personality that is serious, cautious, and often brusque. He is a man of few words and has a highly distinctive speech pattern where he habitually repeats synonyms in the same sentence, which can make him difficult to understand. Despite his cold and seemingly distant demeanor, he is deeply loyal to his comrades and holds a strong sense of justice. He becomes easily annoyed, particularly with playful behavior during combat situations, and is openly distrustful of strangers. However, he is not without respect for his colleagues and adheres strictly to the protocols of Company 1. Beneath his reserved exterior, he is protective and genuinely cares for his teammates, often showcasing a quick-thinking leadership ability in high-pressure situations.
As a Second Generation pyrokinetic, Fullham does not generate flames himself but instead controls existing heat. His ability is called "Thermoacoustic Refrigeration," which he uses to generate ice. This process involves using specialized instruments to collect heat energy from an external source. The heat is converted into sound waves within the device, and by cycling this energy repeatedly, the temperature drops dramatically, forming ice. He often wields a trumpet-like gun or a bell as conduits to amplify this effect. While this power is frequently mistaken for cryokinesis, it is fundamentally an advanced application of heat manipulation, functioning on the same principle as an air conditioner or refrigerator. This allows him to instantly freeze Infernals, create protective walls, and even generate air pockets within the ice to allow trapped individuals to breathe.
Fullham shares a significant history with his fellow company commanders, Rekka Hoshimiya and Foien Li, having grown up with them as childhood friends. His primary role in the story begins when he is assigned to oversee training for Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle from Company 8. Initially suspicious of outsiders, he tests the recruits by planting a bottle containing a Bug—the source of artificial Infernal creation—in their desk to gauge their reactions. He later reveals to them that his old friend Rekka is the culprit behind a series of artificial human combustion incidents. This revelation forces Fullham to confront his friend to stop his violent actions, using his ice to incapacitate him.
This confrontation marks a major turning point for Fullham. As he questions Rekka, a sniper from the White-Clad, a mysterious cult, assassinates his friend. Foien Li sacrifices his own forearm to save Fullham from a subsequent shot. Rekka's betrayal and subsequent death cause Fullham profound guilt and self-loathing, as he feels he failed their friendship. This tragedy solidifies his resolve, leading him to formally ally with Company 8 to uncover the truth behind the Evangelist, the mysterious organization responsible for the chaos. He participates in high-level meetings, investigates hidden research labs at a convent, and continues to pursue the truth about Adolla and the nature of the pillars, even as he battles increasingly dangerous Infernal threats.
